The use of songs in English classes to improve student's pronunciation: a Case study of Grade 12 at Xai -Xai Secondary School, 2022

This study entitled “The use of songs in English classes to improve student‟s pronunciation: a Ca... more This study entitled “The use of songs in English classes to improve student‟s pronunciation: a Case study of Grade 12 at Xai –Xai Secondary School. Specifically, it aimed to evaluate the impact of using English songs to improve the learner's pronunciation; identify the impact of using English songs to improve the learner's pronunciation, examine the effectiveness of using English songs in teaching pronunciation; describe the English Language teaching techniques in use; and describe grade 12 speaking syllabus. For it to be materialised, we involved 20 students of both sexes attending grade 12 at Xai –Xai Secondary School, alongside 5 teachers of English from the same institution who were submitted to questionnaire, interview and lesson observation. The data were interpreted and analysed to enable the researcher find out the patterns and meanings in numerical data. The study showed that the experimental group students showed great progress in pronunciation proficiency after being trained through English song while the mean of controlled group as they were trained through traditional techniques there was no change at all. Revealed that the experimental group student‟s level of motivation and participation is higher than the students of the control group. The teachers did not plan pronunciation activities for English class, either use songs as media to improve learners pronunciation difficulties. Therefore, songs are found to be very useful media in the fixing the students‟ pronunciation problems in foreign language classrooms.
