We use Data Envelopment Analysis to construct a Biennial Malmquist Index of total factor productivity for individual states. Results show that at the all-India level, total factor productivity growth rate in manufacturing is higher during the post-reform period. Although the majority of states experienced accelerated productivity growth, some states did experience decline in productivity after the reforms. Both before and after the reforms technological progress was the most important component of productivity growth in Indian manufacturing.

Determining absolute soil resistivity is practically impossible due to the continuous changing nature of the soil. So the average soil resistivity is actually found out. A comparative analysis between two methods of averaging viz. general and logarithmic, in determining average soil resistivity has been done in the present paper. The relationship between soil resistivity and soil corrosivity has been used in determining the rate of corrosion suffered by an underground coal tar enamel coated pipeline, with impressed current cathodic protection system.

The extent to which Indian organized manufacturing performance changed after the Economic Reform ... more The extent to which Indian organized manufacturing performance changed after the Economic Reform of 1991 has been an important question among empirical analysts. Using input-output data from the Annual Survey of Industries for the period 1970-71 through 2007-08, this paper compares the pre-and post-reform performances of Indian manufacturing in terms of total factor productivity growth. We use the non-parametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis to construct the Biennial Malmquist Index of total factor productivity for Indian states to determine if the states have experienced improvement in manufacturing productivity during the post-reform years. Results show that at the all-India level, total factor productivity growth rate in manufacturing is higher during the post-reform period. Although the majority of states experienced accelerated productivity growth, some states experienced declines in productivity after the reforms. However, the regional variation in the rates of productivity change diminished during the post-reform years. A non-parametric decomposition of the Malmquist productivity index into its components shows that both before and after the reforms technological progress was the most important component of the manufacturing growth process

Using the state-level input–output quantity data constructed from Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) measured rates of productivity change in selected two-digit manufacturing industries show that at the all-India level, only in cotton textile and chemical and chemical products industries productivity growth slowed down considerably after the reforms. While productivity in other industries improved after the reforms, there was evidence of inter-industry variation in productivity growth rates. State-level estimates show that not only in the leading but also in laggard industrial states the selected industries have experienced improvement in productivity after the reforms. For most of the industries the coefficient of variation in the rate of productivity changes across states diminished significantly after the reforms. But the reverse is true for cotton textiles and chemical and chemical products industries, suggesting that in these two industries the individual states failed to reap the benefit of reforms in a uniform manner. Also for all industries except textile products, technological progress was the prime driving force behind the productivity growth over the post-reform years.

Z aw's Wolfsnake (Lycodon zawi) has been recorded from the northeastern states of India (Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura), Myanmar, and Bangladesh (Uetz et al. 2022). These snakes have a dark brown dorsum with white transverse bands, a cream-colored venter, and 17 dorsal scale rows at midbody (Slowinski et al. 2001). The species is found in low-to mid-elevation moist tropical evergreen to semievergreen forests at elevations lower than 500 m in India and Myamar (Slowinski et al. 2001). Very little is known about the prey and predators of the species. Slowinski et al. (2001) mentioned feeding on skinks (likely Sphenomorphus maculatus) and geckos(Hemidactylus frenatus and H. garnotii) in captivity. However, no report documents predation on L. zawi. Herein we report predation on L. zawi by an invertebrate. At 2210 h on 23 June 2022, we encountered a Malaysian Cherry Red Centipede (Scolopendra dehaani) about 200 mm in length preying on a L. zawi about 350 mm in length in a residential area of Narengi in Guwahati, Assam, India (26.1764 N, 91.8340 E). By 2345 h, the centipede escaped after devouring much of the snake's body (Fig. 1). Centipedes are known to prey on insects, amphibians, reptiles, small birds, bats, and rodents (e.g., Vazifdar et al. 2021). In particular, species of Scolopendra are ferocious predators that use a neurotoxic venom and strong jaws to immobilize and kill their prey (Hodge and Goodyear 2021). Vazifdar et al. (2021) recorded a S. dehaani preying on an Andaman Wolfsnake (Lycodon hypsirhinoides) from Havelock Island, Andaman Islands, India. To our knowledge, this is the first record of S. dehaani preying on L. zawi and the second documented record of S. dehaani preying on a species of Lycodon.

An hybrid acoustic method combining a large eddy simulation and a stastistical modelling of turbu... more An hybrid acoustic method combining a large eddy simulation and a stastistical modelling of turbulent noise sources is developed to predict noise of real jets. The main objective is to merge advantages of both kind of prediction model to obtain a robust industrial acoustic tool. Thus, the Ffowcs-Williams & Hawkings Wave Extrapolation Method is classically used to obtain the low frequency part of spectra. The higher frequency part is estimated by means of Tam & Auriault's fine-scale turbulence noise theory applied to a reconstructed unfiltered mean flow field. This hybrid jet noise prediction method as well as aeroacoustics results for isothermal and heated subsonic jets (M = 0.9) are reported in this paper. An overestimation of turbulence levels in mixing layers is observed, leading to a shorter potential core for both simulations. However, velocity profiles and turbulence length scales are satisfactory by using normalized distances by the potential core length. Noise levels obtained are consequently overpredicted even if angular variations and temperature effects seem well evaluated.

Numerical simulation of mixed convection and surface radiation in a horizontal rectangular channe... more Numerical simulation of mixed convection and surface radiation in a horizontal rectangular channel with five discrete heat sources protruded from the bottom wall has been carried out. Air is considered as working fluid and flow to be laminar, steady, and incompressible. The parameters varied are Reynolds number (Re) = 100–750, the spanwise position of vortex generator (VG) x / H = 1.8, 2.8, 3.8 4.8 and 5.8, the pitchwise position of VG, y / H = 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 and emissivity of the heat source, ε c = 0.1–0.9, while emissivity of the VG and channel walls is fixed as 0.9. The governing equations are solved based on SIMPLE algorithm using ANSYS 16.2. The results show that the Reynolds number, the position of vortex (spanwise and pitchwise), and emissivity of heat source have significant effects on heat transfer. It is also noticed that the maximum non-dimensional temperature ( θ max ) is 47.81% with VG at Re = 250 with change in emissivity of the heat sources from 0.1 to 0.9. Finally, a correlation has been developed for average non-dimensional temperature ( θ avg ) using response surface methodology.

Entangled magnetic fields entering into an accretion flow would very soon be stretched into a dom... more Entangled magnetic fields entering into an accretion flow would very soon be stretched into a dominant toroidal component due to strong differentially rotating motion inside the accretion disc. This is particularly true for weakly viscous, low angular momentum transonic or advective discs. We study the trajectories of toroidal flux tubes inside a geometrically thick flow that undergoes a centrifugal force supported shock. We also study effects of these flux tubes on the dynamics of the inflow and the outflow. We use a finite difference method (total variation diminishing) for this purpose and specifically focused on whether these flux tubes significantly affect the properties of the outflows such as its collimation and the rate. It is seen that depending upon the cross-sectional radius of the flux tubes that control the drag force, these field lines may move towards the central object or oscillate vertically before eventually escaping out of the funnel wall (pressure zero surfaces) along the vertical direction. A comparison of results obtained with and without flux tubes show these flux tubes could play a pivotal role in collimation and acceleration of jets and outflows.

We study time evolution of rotating, axisymmetric, two-dimensional inviscid accretion flows aroun... more We study time evolution of rotating, axisymmetric, two-dimensional inviscid accretion flows around black holes using a grid-based finite difference method. We do not use reflection symmetry on the equatorial plane in order to inspect if the disc along with the centrifugal barrier oscillated vertically. In the inviscid limit, we find that the CENtrifugal pressure supported BOundary Layer (CENBOL) is oscillating vertically, more so, when the specific angular momentum is higher. As a result, the rate of outflow produced from the CENBOL, also oscillates. Indeed, the outflow rates in the upper half and the lower half are found to be anticorrelated. We repeat the exercise for a series of specific angular momentum λ of the flow in order to demonstrate effects of the centrifugal force on this interesting behaviour. We find that, as predicted in theoretical models of discs in vertical equilibrium, the CENBOL is produced only when the centrifugal force is significant and more specifically, when λ > 1.5. Outflow rate itself is found to increase with λ as well and so is the oscillation amplitude. The cause of oscillation appears to be due to the interaction among the back flow from the centrifugal barrier, the outflowing winds and the inflow. For low angular momentum, the back flow as well as the oscillation are missing. To our knowledge, this is the first time that such an oscillating solution is found with a well-tested grid-based finite difference code, and such a solution could be yet another reason of why quasi-periodic oscillations should be observed in black hole candidates that are accreting low angular momentum transonic flows.
