That is the question that has focused the efforts of the Working Group the last two years, and whose consideration is summarized in this report. This report represents the first phase evaluation of this topic and is focused primarily on medium (MVDC) and low voltage (LVDC) level applications

The texture of tubes made from Ni-5 at % W is characterized as a bi-axial texture developing along both the axis and the circumference of the cylinder. The deposition of a buffer layer by metal-organic deposition on such a tube is described with the practical example of La2Zr2O7. A superconducting YBCO layer is deposited on top; its texture and the electrical performance are evaluated. In the present state of the art, the YBCO is superconducting at 88 K; it is textured, but can carry only week supercurrents due to insufficient percolation paths. Improvements of the process are underway to enhance the transport current properties.

Research paper thumbnail of Influence of cable clamping force on PEA measurements on HVDC mini-cables

2013 IEEE International Conference on Solid Dielectrics (ICSD), 2013

The technique relies on acoustic contact between the cylindrical cable surface and a flat aluminium plate to couple the acoustic waves to the sensor. This work addresses the practical issue of the clamping force required to maintain good contact and how this may alter the measured space charge distribution. Space charge measurements on mini-cables (model cables) were carried out over a wide range of clamping force and additionally a finite-element simulation model has been developed to model mechanical deformation of mini-cables and provide data that cannot be easily obtained from experiments. A clamping force range for reproducible measurements at room temperature has been determined by comparing results from a group test on a mini-cable.
