Rather, it is an obligation for the poor populations resulting from the rural exodus to be relegated to the urban margins to build poor housing there on unserviced and sometimes undeveloped areas. The lengthening of distances is much more felt since the urban sprawl results in a more or less disorderly extension of the building which too often precedes the establishment of networks of artisanal transport networks, see informal as an alternative to the short comings of public transport. This work to demonstrate through a qualitative and descriptive approach the original forms that mobility takes in the various cities of tropical Africa. Through questions on the forms of spatial registration of informal transport in the margins to understand the conditions of mobility varied according to the type of vehicle used in each city. Thus, from Dakar to Douala where the presence of public transport is less confirmed: coaches, minibuses, collective taxis, pickups and vans, despite their dilapidated condition and their sometimes insufficient supply, constitute a response to the peripheral areas. Precise cases have been cited to allow a better understanding of mobility in African urban fringes. With a particular emphasis on the towns of Lomé and N'djamena where the popular craze for motorcycle taxis in the margins is explained by the isolation of the outlying districts.

An analysis of the way this activity operates in Lomé (Togo), based on field surveys, provides a better understanding of the reasons for the development of this transport mode. The majority of drivers earn enough from the activity to meet their day to day needs and to invest to increase human and economic capital. The arduous working conditions, the impacts on health and the risk of accidents and aggression explain however why 2 the activity is perceived as temporary and undertaken for want of anything better. There is a need to identify measures to professionalise the occupation and improve its image, and also find the best way to implement them. The occasionally stated goal of doing away with motorcycle taxis in order to modernize urban transport systems would have negative effects on their livelihoods.

This paper examines the economic performance of motorbike taxi operators with data from a motorbike drivers survey conducted in Lomé (Togo) in 2012. According to their status in relation to the vehicle ownership, there are four main groups: drivers who own the motorbike, "work and pay" drivers, drivers who rent the motorbike from someone else and motorbike owners who do not operate the vehicle themselves and contract it to drivers in a "work and pay" scheme or a simple rental agreement. However, in response to the low level of transport supply, the citizens of Africa are implementing lde factor integration which has, as yet, received little attention. This paper attempts to improve knowledge about the intermodal and multimodal practices that prevail in three cities of Sub-Saharan Africa. Comparisons between Conakry, Douala and a city of the North, Lyon, reveal that in the two African cities intermodality takes forms that are more prejudicial for the population: the proportion of intermodal trips is higher and they mostly involve a combination of public transport and walking. In Lome, where the motorbike taxi plays a primary role, intermodality makes it possible to travel all over the city, but it has a high cost for users and frequently entails long walking trips. The aim of this article is not to make a geographical analysis of urban mobility but rather to describe the daily territories of motorcycle taxi drivers and to bring a sociological lighting on the recombining of the social bonds induced by this new urban transport system. Based on three logics of localizations of the motorcycle parks that have recomposed the urban space, we show how the various corporations and the trade association are daily places of socialization between drivers of the motorcycle taxis. If the social practices between the drivers and the users are convivial, the relations between drivers and the public agents are more conflictual, because of the policemen and the taxmen who track them. As they circulate in all the districts and transport many people, the taxi-motor bikes drivers are seen as good vectors of information and are often requested by the international associations, institutions and especially the political parties participate in various caravans, public awareness campaigns and election campaigns.

While achieving integrated transport is an increasingly important policy goal in the cities of th... more While achieving integrated transport is an increasingly important policy goal in the cities of the North, it is of little concern to African decision-makers. Nevertheless, the scarcity of transport has prompted African city-dwellers to create "de facto" integration, which has, until now, received little scholarly attention. This paper describes the intermodal and multimodal practices of the inhabitants of Lomé, the capital of Togo, where the motorbike taxi plays a dominant role. Intermodality, i.e. the use of at least two transport modes in the course of a single trip, allows individuals to travel throughout the city but requires trade-offs between transport cost, duration and physically exhausting conditions. Multimodality, which is defined as the use of a different mode or combination of modes for outbound and return trips, is observed to some extent among the working population but even more amongst schoolchildren, usually in order to reduce the cost of transport. The consequences of individuals' "de facto" intermodal and multimodal practices in terms of mobility and money and time budgets highlight the strategic importance of formal transport integration for African city-dwellers.
