Responses to the survey questions to assess the level of financial literacy show that in 2021 less than 4 out of 10 respondents had a good financial knowledge proficiency level. The results also show that more than 1 out of 3 Cypriots are financial fragile, i.e., would not have been able to cover an unexpected financial need within a month without borrowing or asking for financial help. Moreover, about 6 out of 10 did not have a rainy-day fund to cover three months living expenses in case of losing their main source of income. The proportions are higher for young, not employed, low-income and larger households, indicating that these subgroups were the least resilient. These findings suggest that many Cypriot households were ill-prepared to face the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most importantly, the findings indicate that financial kn...

The results show that most heads found their training to be unhelpful and of poor quality. The process by which the Threshold was operationalised varied between schools, in terms of how heads conducted internal training days and how they organised the process by which staff made applications. In some schools it was organised at departmental level, with departments submitting applications following a standard format. Most of the schools in our sample were able to give teachers value added information as the basis for reporting pupil progress, although a number of heads felt that this was not a valid measure of success in all subjects. Most of the staff eligible to apply for the Threshold did so, and most passed. When assessing applications, heads generally assessed the teacher rather than ...

Our financial literacy proxy exerts a large negative effect on the probability of currently owning cryptocurrencies. The financially literate are also more likely to be aware of cryptocurrencies, and more likely to report that they do not intend to own them. We confirm the external validity of our financial literacy proxy and findings using data from a second novel survey of retail investors in 3 Asian countries. More financially literate retail investors are more likely not to have held any cryptocurrencies. We show that the relationship between financial literacy and attitudes to cryptocurrencies is moderated by a different perception of the financial risk involved in cryptocurrencies versus alternative instruments by the more financially literate. Our findings shed light on the demand for cryptocurrencies among the general population and suggest that it is largely driven by unsophisticated users.

The service, known as Moneymadeclear, provides impartial information and guidance on a wide range of personal finance issues tailored to the individual's needs and circumstances. It is available through the web, over the phone or face-to-face across the North-West and North-East. An evaluation of the Money Guidance Pathfinder was undertaken by PFRC to provide an evidence base for decisions on the roll out of a national Money Guidance service.

Analysis of lead innovation adoption can identify the extent to which such activities are observed in the education sector within more innovative organisations. The education sector can also be compared with other sectors of the economy such as manufacturing or other public services and across primary, secondary and higher education.

Our objective is to study the intersection between the public and private sectors of the economy, and in particular to understand the right way to organise and deliver public services. The Centre aims to develop research, contribute to the public debate and inform policy-making. CMPO, now an ESRC Research Centre was established in 1998 with two large grants from The Leverhulme Trust. In 2004 we were awarded ESRC Research Centre status, and CMPO now combines core funding from both the ESRC and the Trust. Centre for Market and Public Organisation

This paper reports the results of an interview-based study, showing that head teachers care about their school’s place in the league tables, and that they believe this system affects behaviour. The effects they identify include some unintended consequences, not necessarily related to improved overall school performance, including focusing on borderline students who can boost a pivotal indicator: the number of students gaining five A*-Cs at GCSE. This behaviour reflects, in part, the dual role played by headteachers: they are both educationalists (serving the interests of all pupils); and school marketers, concerned with promoting the school to existing and prospective parents. The behaviour is also consistent with economic theory, which predicts a focus on that which is measured, potentially at the expense of that which is...
