Science fairs are spaces for scientific initiation, in which students and teachers mount demonstrative exhibitions (DORNFELD, 2011).

Here we apply the optimal path crack model (OPC) to investigate the mobility of road networks and propose a new proxy for resilience of urban mobility. In contrast to static approaches, the OPC accounts for the dynamics of rerouting as a response to traffic jams. Precisely, one simulates a sequence of failures (cracks) at the most vulnerable segments of the optimal origindestination paths that are capable to collapse the system. Our results with synthetic and real road networks reveal that their levels of disorder, fractions of unidirectional segments and spatial correlations can drastically affect the vulnerability to traffic congestion. By applying the OPC to downtown Boston and Manhattan, we found that Boston is significantly more vulnerable than Manhattan. This is compatible with the fact that Boston heads the list of American metropolitan areas with the highest average time waste in traffic. Moreover, our analysis discloses that the origin of this difference comes from the intrinsic spatial correlations of each road network. Finally, we argue that, due to their global influence, the most important cracks identified with OPC can be used to pinpoint potential small rerouting and structural changes in road networks that are capable to substantially improve urban mobility.

In one direction, cracks from cascading failures into networks were generated using a modified Optimal Path-Cracking (OPC) model proposed by Andrade et al [1]. In this model, we broke links of maximum energies from optimal paths between two sites with internal (euclidean) distances l in networks with linear size L . Each link of this network has an energy value that scales with a power-law that can be controlled using a parameter of the disorder β . Using finite-size scaling and the exponents from percolation theory we found that the mass of the cracked links on local optimal paths scales with a power-law l 0 . 4 as a separable equation from L and that can be independent of the disorder parameter.

The paper examines the variance explained by such indexes of the observed maize yields for the period 1990 to 2012. The potential predictability of the flood index and drought index are evaluated using a multi-ensemble of 20 members forecast of the NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) Regional Spectral Model (RSM) nested into the ECHAM4.6 driven by persisted Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) in February-May (FMAM) season during the period 1974-2012. The analysis shows that the flood index explains better the variance of the maize yields in Ceará than the drought index. The RSM is able to predict the spatial-temporal variability of such index, showing higher correlation over the Sertão Central region, which is known as the driest region in Ceará. Our results indicate high predictability of the index for estimating maize yields. The paper also shows that persistence of SST over several months is sufficient for a good predictive capability of such scheme. It was also shown that the SST-forced component of climate variation does translate into the weather features that are important for crop yields.

We derive exact results for the percolation threshold on planar lattices, and present a conjecture for the value the percolation-threshold for in any lattice. We also identify presumably universal critical exponents, including a fractal dimension, associated with the strongly-connected components both for planar and cubic lattices. These critical exponents are different from those associated either with standard percolation or with directed percolation.
