Veriler, uygul...

The data of this paper were collected from 30 seventh-grade students enrolled in a public school in Ankara, Turkey in the first and second semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Participants of the study were engaged in a teaching experiment aimed to develop their meaningful understanding of ratio and proportion unit through authentic activities. The intervention prolonged 30 lesson hours and Proportional Reasoning Test was applied to the students at the beginning of the instruction as pre-test, at the end of the instruction as post-test, and 5 months later as retention test. A one-way repeated measures of ANOVA was conducted to compare scores on the Proportional Reasoning Achievement Test at Time 1 (pretest), Time 2 (posttest) and Time 3 (retention test). ...

In this classroom design research study, a classroom learning trajectory and related instructional sequence were formulated based on the theory of Realistic Mathematics Education and implemented by the teacher. Findings showed that the teacher contributed to the design research in each phase, and her contributions promoted students’ mathematical practices regarding linking composite units and iterating composite units.

Data was collected during the spring semester of 2011-2012 academic year. Qualitative design was used to collect and analyze data. The framework used in this study was developed by Artzt and Armour-Thomas (1996) for reflection on teacher cognition and instructional practice. Results revealed that when pre-service teacher had traditional teaching practice, the discrepancies between teaching at the university and at the elementary school became more obvious and reflections became less useful. Creating environments that pre-service teachers can reflect on their instructional practices could help them in enhancing their awareness towards the complexities of classroom environments.

In addition, we examine students’ solution strategies for the problems and obstacles that prevent students from answering the problems correctly by using a mixed method research design. A total of 935 middle school students were given a paper-pencil test and 12 of them were interviewed. Findings indicated that achievement of the participants were low and that students used a limited number of strategies for solving the problems. In addition, these strategies were found to have lacked the argument of the linear proportional and nonlinear proportional relationships among length, area, and volume concepts for most of the participants’ answers. Moreover, analysis revealed that the confusion of linear proportional and nonlinear proportional relationships and misinterpretation of additive and mu...

A longitudinal survey design was used in order to collect data from 30 prospective middle school mathematics teachers before they graduated from teacher education program, at the end of their first year employment and at the end of their second year of employment as a teacher. Findings indicated that mathematics teaching efficacy of the prospective teachers decreased at the end of their first year of teaching but increased at the end of their second year of teaching.

The underlying reasons of the difficulties were investigated as well. Mixed research design was adopted for the aims of the study by collecting data through an achievement test from 935 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The achievement test included real life problems that required proportional reasoning, and were related to the measurement of length, perimeter, area and volume concepts. In addition, task-based interviews were conducted on 12 of these students to collect more comprehensive data and to support the findings of the achievement test. Findings revealed that although students were mostly successful in giving correct answers, their reasoning lacked a clear argument of the direct and indirect proportional relationships between the variables and that they approached the problems by superficial characteristics of the problems.

Our goal was to identify variations among prospective teachers' descriptions of students' thinking and frequency of their interpretations about how teaching affected their students' learning. Thirty-three participants responded to open-ended questionnaires or interviews that elicited reflections on their ...
