This study analysed decision making by farmers under risk and uncertainty due to climatic change, using the Multi-Level Analysis Tool for the Agricultural sector (MATA) model. The main objective of the study was to find out the impact of climate change on cropping activities and agricultural income. The results indicated a decrease in water supply leading to changes in the composition and pattern of crop activities, reduced crop yields and smaller incomes for farmers. Reforms in water management policies and investments are suggested to improve water usage efficiency and to expand irrigation to deal with climate change.

This chapter explores the underlying political motivations, historical meanings, symbolisms and paradoxes of the Obama family’s visit within the broad frameworks of US’ sub-Saharan Africa politics and “Roots” or “Diaspora” tourism. Ghana was an appropriate destination for the trip for two reasons. First, the country provided the political context for him to outline his Presidency’s sub-Saharan African policy. Second, on the “map of Africanness”, Ghana, with its scores of slave trade relics presented the historical and emotional setting for individual members of the family to engage with the historical truth about their heritage and identity. Indeed, the Obama family’s tour of the Cape Coast Castle fortresses, like that of thousands of African Americans who have visited or will in the future be visiting the...

Was matriarchy fundamental to the ideals of kinship system in ancient and traditional Africa? Ifi Amadiume has strongly advocated for a re-interpretation of African history whereby the historical place of womanhood is restored to its rightful place. In doing this she rejects any attempt at “imitating” Eurocentric feminism to “construct” new structures arguing that, “we already have a history and legacy of a woman’s culture” and that there is therefore the need to highlight it in a social enquiry.

There are more than six billion of us on Earth, and by 2100 we may number ten billion. Most of us will live in urban centers, and many are likely to live short and impoverished lives. Lacking both the wealth or awareness to address problems of life in crowded cities, they will suffer from disease and inadequate food and water.

Relying on archival documents complemented by interviews, the research reveals that unlike chieftaincy forms in other traditional Ghanaian societies, the people of Odomase have a completely different practice in electing chiefs. The two royal houses have the endorsement of central government to elect two candidates to be installed concurrently as chiefs for the traditional area. The authors argue that the dual chieftaincy arrangement in Odomase, despite its seeming challenges, is the best solution to address the intractable conflict in the traditional polity of the area.
