Nowadays, chickens and eggs are regarded as comprehensive and favorite foods of people and they have a special place in food program of families. This study assesses the technical efficiency level of poultry egg producers in Ilorin, Kwara state using Data Envelopment Analysis. A stratified random sampling technique was adopted in selecting 150 poultry egg producers. The data for the study were collected with the use of well structured questionnaires from poultry farmers. The result showed the poultry egg farmers are relatively technically efficient in their use of resources, with a mean technical inefficiency of 26%. The mean input slack for numbers of birds, feeds and labour have slacks of 6.936, 91.021 and 0.334 respectively implying that inputs could be decreased by those units and still produce the same level of output. The study concluded that the poultry egg farmers are relatively technically efficient. The study recommend that reducing excess amount of inputs on one hand and raising output on the other hand, efficiency level can be improved and farmers could benefit economically.

Data were obtained using structured questionnaire. A random sampling was employed for selecting 86 respondents representing 20% of the total 430 registered members of farmers association of Nigeria in the metropolis. Descriptive statistics were used as analytical tools. The result shows that majority of the farmers were male and ranges between 31 to 50 years of age. The farmers were literate with majority having secondary education and also with 6 to 10 years experience in pesticides usage and farming. The study further revealed that despite high literacy level among farmers in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara state and widespread experiences in the use of pesticides, majority do not understand the information displayed on pesticide product label. The results showed the information displayed on pesticide product label was not effective in the sense that the farmers do not read the labels let alone understood it .They however preferred the information given by their colleagues. Majority of the farmers keep the pesticides inside their houses, prepare it on the field and discard the empty packages into forest. Most of the farmers know about Dichloro-diphenyl trichloro ethane as the only banned pesticide in circulation. The major problems facing the farmers with regards to understanding pesticide labels are that languages used are mostly technical and foreign. It was suggested that pictorial demonstration and bold images should be used since what is seen are easy understood

Insufficient information on the determinant of poultry farmers’ interest in egg production often ... more Insufficient information on the determinant of poultry farmers’ interest in egg production often limits the opportunity to predict the level of preference for poultry production. To develop policies in addressing poultry farmers’ problem in respect of their participation in egg production, the determinants and the level of their interest in agriculture have to be adequately explored and understood. Towards this end a study has been conducted in Ilorin, Kwara state capital to evaluate the factors influencing poultry farmers’ participation in egg production. The study area was divided into three and a stratified random sampling technique was adopted in selecting a total sample size of 300 respondents, out of which 50 registered poultry egg producers and 50 registered poultry non egg producers were selected from each division. A structured questionnaire was administered to obtain the information needed from the sampled producers. Data analysis was done using binary Logit regression. The result revealed that year of education, Farm size, income, participation in cooperative society and credit are the significant factors contributing to their participation. The marginal probability done on the significant binary Logit regression showed that participation in cooperative society had highest influence on the poultry egg farmer’s interest and credit access showed the extent of their interest in the elasticity of probability. The study concluded that socioeconomic variables such as years of education, farm size, income, participation in cooperative society and access to credit are the determinant of poultry egg farmer’s interest in egg production. It was recommended that Credit which had a positive and significant effect on the interest of poultry egg farmers is necessary to encourage technical innovations and timely availability of necessary inputs. Government should influence by reducing borrowing rates on credit in order to encourage and accelerate the transformation of poultry industry.

A random sampling technique was adopted in selecting 120 fish farmers from fish farmers association of Nigeria Ilorin branch list. The data for the study were collected with the use of well structured questionnaire. The result showed the fish farmers were relatively technically efficient in their use of resources, with a mean technical inefficiency of 40%. The result also showed that 73% of the fish farmers exhibited increasing returns to scale. On the average; numbers of fingerlings, feeds and labour had slacks of 0.0, 6.5 and 0.4 respectively. These imply that inputs could be decreased by those units and still produce the same level of output. Thus, the fish farmers are said to be inefficient in input usage by the said values. It was concluded that though average cost is expected to decrease as output increases there is still room for improvement in productivity of fish farms. With this high level of returns to scale in fish farming, it is recommended that this information should be spread to all the farmers in the study area and other surrounding communities.
