Qualitative data - participant observation, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews for the paper were drawn from a larger mixed methods, comparative study of natural resource utilisation among rural inhabitants of Ogun State, Nigeria and among rural inhabitants in the Bushbuckridge area of Mphumalanga, South Africa. Focus group discussions were transcribed and analyzed thematically, using a phenomenological method. The results reveal that access to and control of forest resources are complex and heavily influenced by gender. Whereas women rely to a greater extent than men on forests and forest products for both their basic and non-basic needs, they have lesser roles than men in the decision-making that affects and controls their own lives and those of their households and communities. Poverty, cultural beliefs and values of society, social at...

The role of ecotourism as an environmentally friendly economic activity is widely recognised for enhancing nature conservation while addressing the development needs of local communities. Thus, ecotourism constitutes a very important component of national and international tourism industries. Unlike traditional conservation approaches which have encouraged unsustainable development, Biosphere Reserves (BRs) are based on a unique zonation landscape model comprised of three zones, namely, an inner core area, buffer zone and an outer transition zone. Results from our survey revealed that the majority of respondents (>62%) visited tourism facilities within the VBR at least more than once per year while over 90% of them were willing to visit them again and make recommendations to others. While the main reason for touring the VBR was to derive plea...

The Wave 6 World Value Survey data on Nigeria were analyzed with t-test, analysis of variance and stepwise regression. Results indicated that significant differences and relationships exist in pro-environmental behavior across socio-demographic and geographical variables of respondents. Social class, membership of environmental organization, region and income were found to be predictors of pro-environmental behavior. The study concluded that these variables are important in understanding people's pro-environmental behavior and must be considered in the design of any interventions geared to improve pro-environmental behavior amongst Nigerians.

At the same time, e-waste is associated with negative human health impacts, as well as environmental pollution. Therefore, environmental awareness on this waste stream is crucial in its management and possible minimization. In this paper, we report on a survey which investigated awareness levels and knowledge amongst households in the Jos metropolis, Plateau State (Nigeria). We interviewed 228 respondents by means of close-ended questionnaires. The results indicated that cell phones (93%) and television sets (82%) were mentioned by most respondents. The main reasons for acquiring these electronic devices entailed the replacement of damaged ones (49.6%), frequent product upgrades (37.7%), as well as theft (35.55%), amongst ...

Cross national data used were extracted from the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) on households' cooking energy and was subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that 55% of sampled households have access to electricity, while about two-third (66.3%) of households depend on biomass as fuel for cooking. The Chi-square analysis revealed that a significant statistical relationship existed between geo-political regions, place of residence, access to electricity, educational level, and wealth index and type of cooking used. Results also showed significant statistical differences between rural and urban households' type of cooking fuel while analysis of variance found significant differences in the type of cooking fuel according to regions, educational level, and wealth index. Multiple regression results demonstrated that socioeconomic factors such as household size, geographical region, place of residence, educational level and wealth index have a significant positive influence on the type of cooking fuel used by households in Nigeria. However, access to electricity showed no significant association with the household type of cooking fuel. These results have important implications for human health and environmental sustainability, and therefore it was recommended that government needs to intensify educational efforts towards enlightening people about the need for the sustainable utilization of energy resources.

Few studies have captured waste management problems in Nigerian educational institutions, particularly the views of students. Using a structured, self-administered questionnaire, 650 students were surveyed from six secondary schools in two of the four educational zones of Ogun State. Data collected were subjected to percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and chi-square statistical analyses. Findings revealed that secondary school students from the sampled zones were aware of waste problems on their school compounds, but possessed poor waste management practices. The study showed that propensity for waste management practices differ by sex, class and age of students. Significant relationships were observed between students' sex, age and class and their level of awareness, knowledge and practices of waste management.

To achieve this goal, the 2010–2012 data from the International Social Survey Program “Environmental III” was analysed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics, including the employment of the structural equation model. Significant differences were found between pro-environmental behaviour and other environmental variables such as environmental concern, awareness, willingness to sacrifice, and others in terms of the educational background, place of living, ethnic identity and provinces where respondents lived. Thus, to increase PEB amongst citizens would require the introduction and support of development programmes that enhance access to more education and environmental awareness across all population groups.
