In order for a company to successfully implement a sustainable approach to manufacturing, they would have to take a critical look into the different aspects of day to day business operations, assessing these operations and re-modifying them to achieve standard sustainable practices.
Sustainability is a broad term and in manufacturing involves the integration of a host of various technological and non-technological strategies from the acquiring of raw materials, through production and on to disposal, to achieve a desired outcome. Strategies such as, green technology, eco-manufacturing, eco machining, clean production and so on, have to be employed to alleviate environmental concerns such as pollution, material toxicity, greenhouse gas emissions and much more, while lean manufacturing, six sigma, 5s, Just In Time and other methods are used to curb or eliminate waste from manufacturing operations.
The challenge now for organizations in both the manufacturing and services industry is to redesign products, processes and delivery practices that will result in less environmental and societal degradation, but at the same retain or increase their share in the global market.
