Health care providers in Nigeria aged 18 years and above participated in this study. The study was conducted to assess the enablers and perceived risks of Covid-19 vaccination among healthcare providers in Nigeria. A snowball sampling technique was relied upon in the distribution of the online questionnaires sent in the form of a link through social media outlets such as Whatsapp, Face book and emails within four weeks interval. The analysis was performed using the Statistical Software Package SPSS version 22.0.Four Hundred and forty-five respondents filled the questionnaire from the six geopolitical zones of the country. It was observed that safety of the vaccine, proven efficacy and good knowledge of the vaccine were enablers to the Covid-19 vaccine uptake. This finding shows that a higher proportion of health care providers was in support of the covid-19 vaccine under the presumption that ...

Patients face a range of adverse impacts owing to the disease as most are unable to relate effectively with their communities, battling stigma and fear of discrimination. This study aimed to explore the stigma associated with the lived experiences of BUD in patients in Nigeria. Methods This was a cross-sectional qualitative study that employed a focus group discussion (FGD) and key informant interviews in Enugu State, Nigeria. A random sampling of communities was followed by a purposive selection of FGD participants and key informants. A total of six key informants and eight FGD participants took part in the study. Data were collected over 6 wk from December 2022 to February 2023. The NVivo application was used to analyse transcripts and compute themes of quotes. Results Patients experience...

Evidence has shown that a great proportion of healthcare providers and patients had acquired infections within a healthcare facility. Methodology: A snowball sampling technique was utilized in the distribution of the online questionnaires sent in the form of a link through social media outlets such as WhatsApp, Face book and emails. This study was carried out among the clinical medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, in all colleges of medicine in southeastern Nigeria. There was no restriction on the number of clinical medical student per school. An online survey was created using the free software Google form and distributed through social media networks (WhatsApp, Facebook, Emails). Data was collected within 4 weeks interval. Analysis was performed using the Statistical Software Package SPSS version 22.0. Descriptive statistics (including means and standard deviations) was calculated for the numerical variables. It has played a significant role, particularly for children, and is considered a major achievement and relevant in preventing childhood diseases worldwide. This study looks at the uptake and determinants of childhood vaccination status among children under the age of one year, for Gambia, Sierra Leon, and Liberia. Method Data from 2019 to 20 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia were pooled for the analysis used in this study. Data were obtained from a total weighted sample of 5,368 children aged 0–12 months through a stratified two-stage cluster sampling approach. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the predictors of childhood vaccination uptake at 95% confidence interval (CIs) with computed adjusted odds ratios (aORs). Results The weighted sample pooled prevalence of full vaccination among children under 12 ...

This study appraised low vision devices in the low vision population of the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Clinical assessments including external examination, refraction, and ophthalmoscopy were carried out on 239 individuals with vision impairment seen in outreaches in 5 states of South-East Nigeria. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS (version 24.0). Statistical significance was based on p<0.05. Individuals with moderate and severe vision impairment were 53.1% and 23.0% respectively while blindness was 23.9% in the study population. More so, 64.4% of the population had never visited an eye care professional despite poor vision. Of the 32. 2% who had used a form of assistive device; magnifiers were most common. Ignorance (53.1%), distance (20.9%), cost (7.9%), and insufficient service (7.9%) were challenges faced by respondents. The ...

ARIs are reportedly key contributing factors to childhood morbidities and deaths, with a higher impact on children less than the age of five years. This paper aimed at exploring the prevalence of ARIs and their contextual determinants among children less than 60 months of age in the rural settings of the Gambia. Method: The Gambia Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) in 2019-20 was used for this study. Data were obtained from 1364 rural women aged 15-49 with children less than 60 months through a stratified two-stage cluster sampling approach. Percentages and chi-square tests were used and variables with p-value <0.15 were included in the model. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the predictors of acute respiratory infection at 95% confidence interval (CIs) with computed adjusted odds ratios (aORs). All the study data were analyzed using Stata version 17. Results: The weighted prevalence of ARIs among children under 60 months of age in the rural Gambia was 37.1% with 95% CI (34.5%-39.6%). The magnitude of ARI was higher among children 25-60 months age group (38.6%), male children (38.9%) unvaccinated children (42.9%), and those whose fathers and mothers were not working at 60.5% and 38.7%, respectively. In the adjusted model, children whose mother had primary education [aOR=0.65, 95% CI= 0.46-0.91], currently non-breastfed children [aOR=1.40, 95% CI= 1.09-1.79] and those whose father were not working [aOR=2.65, 95% CI= 1.47-4.17] were found to be associated with ARIs among children less than 60 months in The Gambia. Conclusion: The prevalence of ARI was moderately high across children under 5 years of age in rural Gambia, low mother's educational levels, and unemployed fathers. The program must consider improvements in the quality of care provided to children in both primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare levels in rural settings. Partner support and adapting community-based supporting systems on child health strategies should be strengthened especially in rural settings.

With strategic interventions aimed at preventing avoidable blindness and reducing the burden of low vision, research is being carried out to reveal the magnitude, characteristics, and available interventions for low vision. This study was aimed at characterizing low vision among populations in the SouthEast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. A total of 1473 persons were screened in outreaches across the zone. Clinical assessments, including external examination, refraction and ophthalmoscopy, were carried out, and 239 persons (16.2%) were identified with vision impairment with the various categories established. Data were analyzed using the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 24.0) and presented using frequencies, percentages, and tables. Statistical significance was based on p<0.05. The prevalence of moderate and severe vision impairment was 8.6% and 3.7%, respectively, while blindness was 3.9%. Cataracts (32.6%) and glaucoma (22.2%) were the most common causes of vision impairment and blindness. There was no positive relationship between age, sex and occupation of individuals and level of vision impairment with P values of 0.52, 0.21 and 0.11, respectively. Living in a rural area was not significantly associated with a higher degree of visual impairment than living in an urban area with P=0.81.

The impact of COVID-19 in Africa, is contrary to the experts and professional predictions. Most African have very poor healthcare systems, water supply, sanitary environment and other factors that are requisite to combating the spread of the virus. Reports on COVID-19 incidence from Africa may not be a true reflection of the actual situation. However, a focus on black people is crucial due to predominant societal concerns, such as white supremacy, racism, conspiracy beliefs, and inequality among others. This paper focuses on the misconception and mistrust of vaccines that is predominant among black people in the United States. After a concise review of the literature, the author(s) found that disinformation and inequality-driven mistrust are two primary factors surrounding vaccine acceptance among black people. These factors which lead to the erosion of trust in vaccines include critical media reports, vaccine recalls, social media stories/rumors, and new critical studies. Conclusively, the existing mistrust and misconception of vaccines among black people are speculated to continue by a few researches, especially in the face of the ongoing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Co...
