When one thinks of heroes the images that come to mind are usually those of great warriors and of... more When one thinks of heroes the images that come to mind are usually those of great warriors and of founders of civilizations. These men cause ruptures and introduce changes in their surroundings. Except in some specific periods of Ancient Egypt’s History, the idea of rupture and change is not a favourable one to the Egyptian mindset and political ideology. This reason led some Egyptologists to believe that there is not an Egyptian hero. There is, however, a broader way to perceive this ‘hero figure’. For decades, the scholars of mythology and literature have been studying the mythical hero. What they advocate is that this figure can be found in the accounts and narratives of practically every civilization, which leads us to the question: is there an Egyptian hero?

Since the beginning of the 20th century, mythologists have been studying the hero figure – the pr... more Since the beginning of the 20th century, mythologists have been studying the hero figure – the protagonist of myths and a character that stands out due to its characteristics and extraordinary destiny. Over time, patterns were identified and theories elaborated regarding the hero figure, in which its origin (i.e. its conception and birth) plays a fundamental role. This genesis is often miraculous, as a way of setting the hero apart from the rest of his peers.
In this paper we intend to take a look at Hatshepsut’s divine birth myth as part of a heroic narrative that was built around this pharaoh and as a possible example of a myth concerning the birth of a hero, placing the symbolism of Hatshepsut’s divine origin in context, as well as making a comparative exercise with other myths concerning the birth of heroes in order to ascertain if there are similarities and common motifs between them.

At the entrance of Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple two of the largest statues ever built in pharaonic Egypt were erected. Although the cultic building has perished shortly after the pharaoh’s death, the imposing statues kept firm in their place and, centuries later, became a place of pilgrimage.

Long Abstract:

Built during a reign known for its attention to the Arts, the colossal statues known as Memnon Colossi were part of Amenhotep III's mortuary temple. However, these sculptures gained popularity centuries later, in the Roman Epoch, receiving visitors from various points of the Ancient World.
Amenhotep III's mortuary temple disappeared shortly after his reign. On the one hand, the building was partly destroyed by an earthquake in the thirteenth century B.C., and on the other, what remained of it was used by the pharaohs of the nineteenth dynasty to build their own mortuary temples.
In this paper we wish to demonstrate how a symbol - in this case, a statue representing a king of the eighteenth dynasty - can be "usurped" and reused later in time. The appropriation of one of the statues occurred in the Roman Period after another earthquake made alterations to its structure, causing it to produce sound. The noises that came out of the sculpture were perceived as a manifestation of the divine and eventually it was associated with Memnon, a roman hero that died in Troy. Thus the name by which we still call the colossal statues today.
The statues that once had the magical function of protecting the pharaoh's temple were by the time of the Romans a pilgrimage site, where people came to witness the mystical phenomenon and engrave a sign of their presence on the statue itself, attesting their communication with the divine.

At first glance, one might associate the god’s popularity with its role as god and king of the dead, due to the importance of the Afterlife in the ancient Egyptian imaginary. However, Osiris had various “spheres of action” besides ruling the world of the dead. He is associated with ideas of regeneration and rebirth and ultimately with the cosmos and the cycle of life, since the Egyptians perceived time as cyclical. He was also linked with vegetation and the waters of the Nile – the vehicle through which his rebirth is made possible – and also with the monarchical system, and with Order (Maat), working as the opposite of his brother, Seth.
Osiris is not only a deity which has symbols connected to him, he is also at the same time a symbol – better yet, various symbols – himself. In other words, Osiris like many other deities has identifying symbols, for instance, the djed pillar, a symbol of stability. However he is also a symbol to various other things, as was mentioned above.
Using Plutarch’s account of the osirian mythic cycle as our source, we intend to identify and analyze the symbols associated with this god. Likewise we intend to look at Osiris as a figure containing many symbols and try to understand why such use of a deity was made by the ancient Egyptians. More than a god with powers and attributes, Osiris was a god of symbols, incorporating a multitude of meanings and attributes in himself.

When one thinks of heroes the images that come to mind are usually those of great warriors, of me... more When one thinks of heroes the images that come to mind are usually those of great warriors, of men who were the founders of civilizations. These men – in one way or another – cause ruptures and introduce changes in their surroundings. Except in some specific periods of Ancient Egypt’s History, namely those of external domination, the idea of rupture and change is not a favorable one to the Egyptian mindset and political ideology. This reason led some Egyptologists to believe that there isn't an Egyptian hero, at least not in the terms stated previously (Bolshakov & Shoushchevsky).
There is however a broader way to perceive this “hero figure”. Since the beginning of the twentieth century scholars of mythology and literature have been studying the mythical hero, the protagonist of myths. What they discovered is that this figure can be found in the accounts and narratives of practically every civilization. In this communication we aim to study a subject that belongs to Egyptology using the works of Joseph Campbell and David Leeming – two of the main scholars of the hero myth – as our theoretical source. Sustaining our analysis of various Egyptian narratives in the fundamental stages of the hero myth we hope to bring a different perspective of this subject to Egyptology.
Our goal is to approach the hero myth in Ancient Egypt from both perspectives: the historical approach, where Egyptology is in point; and the broader interpretation of literary studies, where cultural production and its consequences are in point.

At first glance, one might associate the god’s popularity with its role as god and king of the dead, due to the importance of the Afterlife in the ancient Egyptian imaginary. However, Osiris had various “spheres of action” besides ruling the world of the dead. He is associated with ideas of regeneration and rebirth and ultimately with the cosmos and the cycle of life, since the Egyptians perceived time as cyclical. He was also linked with vegetation and the waters of the Nile – the vehicle through which his rebirth is made possible – and also with the monarchical system, and with Order (Maat), working as the opposite of his brother, Seth.
Osiris is not only a deity which has symbols connected to him, he is also at the same time a symbol – better yet, various symbols – himself. In other words, Osiris like many other deities has identifying symbols, for instance, the djed pillar, a symbol of stability. However he is also a symbol to various other things, as was mentioned above.
Using Plutarch’s account of the osirian mythic cycle as our source, we intend to identify and analyze the symbols associated with this god. Likewise we intend to look at Osiris as a figure containing many symbols and try to understand why such use of a deity was made by the ancient Egyptians. More than a god with powers and attributes, Osiris was a god of symbols, incorporating a multitude of meanings and attributes in himself.

When one thinks of heroes the images that come to mind are usually those of great warriors, of me... more When one thinks of heroes the images that come to mind are usually those of great warriors, of men who were the founders of civilizations. These men – in one way or another – cause ruptures and introduce changes in their surroundings. Except in some specific periods of Ancient Egypt’s History, namely those of external domination, the idea of rupture and change is not a favorable one to the Egyptian mindset and political ideology. This reason led some Egyptologists to believe that there isn't an Egyptian hero, at least not in the terms stated previously (Bolshakov & Shoushchevsky).
There is however a broader way to perceive this “hero figure”. Since the beginning of the twentieth century scholars of mythology and literature have been studying the mythical hero, the protagonist of myths. What they discovered is that this figure can be found in the accounts and narratives of practically every civilization. In this communication we aim to study a subject that belongs to Egyptology using the works of Joseph Campbell and David Leeming – two of the main scholars of the hero myth – as our theoretical source. Sustaining our analysis of various Egyptian narratives in the fundamental stages of the hero myth we hope to bring a different perspective of this subject to Egyptology.
Our goal is to approach the hero myth in Ancient Egypt from both perspectives: the historical approach, where Egyptology is in point; and the broader interpretation of literary studies, where cultural production and its consequences are in point.

Por outras palavras, o que pretendemos é debruçarmo-nos sobre a temática do mito do herói no Egipto Antigo e, para o fazermos, socorremo-nos de um caso específico, o de Osíris, uma das figuras maiores da religião e da mitologia egípcias.
O herói mítico é a figura que se assume como protagonista dos mitos e que corresponde a um paradigma que parece estar presente nas narrativas de todas as civilizações ao longo do tempo.
Para percebermos se Osíris pode ser considerado um herói confrontaremos a fonte com as etapas que caracterizam a viagem do herói estabelecidas por David Leeming.
