Research paper thumbnail of Fully Symmetric Relativistic Quantum Mechanics and Its Physical Implications

Mathematics, 2021

A new formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics is presented and applied to a free, massive, ... more A new formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics is presented and applied to a free, massive, and spin-zero elementary particle in the Minkowski spacetime. The reformulation requires that time and space, as well as the timelike and spacelike intervals, are treated equally, which makes the new theory fully symmetric and consistent with the special theory of relativity. The theory correctly reproduces the classical action of a relativistic particle in the path integral formalism, and allows for the introduction of a new quantity called vector-mass, whose physical implications for nonlocality, the uncertainty principle, and quantum vacuum are described and discussed.

The obtained results show that the gauge functions directly affect the energy function and allow for converting an undriven physical system into a driven one. This is a novel phenomenon in dynamics that resembles the role of gauges in quantum field theories.

Research paper thumbnail of Using Physical Activity Trackers in Arthritis Self-Management: A Qualitative Study of Patient and Rehabilitation Professional Perspectives

Arthritis care & research, Jan 8, 2018

We conducted focus groups with patients, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, in Ontario, Alberta or British Columbia, Canada. To be eligible, patients reported a diagnosis of inflammatory or osteo- arthritis. Rehabilitation professionals reported at least 40% of their caseload dedicated to arthritis care. Participants had any level of experience with PATs. A thematic analytic approach was used. Three themes were identified: 1) Anticipating sharing objective measures of physical activity: Participants agreed PATs had potential to improve consultations between patients with arthritis and rehabilitation professionals, but were uncertain as to how to achieve this potential; 2) Perceived or experienced barriers to start or continue using a PAT: Participants shared doubts about whether existing PATs would meet spec...

Qualitative interviews with thematic analysis informed by a relational ethics lens. A multidisciplinary health research centre in Vancouver, Canada. This study was codeveloped by patient partners and researchers at the centre. 22 people living with arthritis, with experience as members of a patient advisory board at the research centre from 1 month to 10 years. We identified three main themes: (1) Being Heard: Participants had experienced uncomfortable emotions (eg, feelings of insecurity) in their relationships with researchers. The discomfort, however, was minimised by the demonstration of mutual respect in their interactions. Specifically, participants valued environments without a hierarchy between patient partners and researchers, where contributions of each party were considered equally important, and where patients'...

We assessed the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial use in adult intensive care units (ICUs) across Vietnam. Methods Monthly repeated point prevalence surveys were systematically conducted to assess HAI prevalence and antimicrobial use in 15 adult ICUs across Vietnam. Adults admitted to participating ICUs before 08:00 a.m. on the survey day were included. Results Among 3287 patients enrolled, the HAI prevalence was 29.5% (965/3266 patients, 21 missing). Pneumonia accounted for 79.4% (804/1012) of HAIs Most HAIs (84.5% [855/1012])

Research paper thumbnail of A Lightweight Solution for Defending Against Deauthentication/Disassociation Attacks on 802.11 Networks

2008 Proceedings of 17th International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks, 2008

In the current IEEE 802.11 standards, whenever a wireless station wants to leave the network, it sends a deauthentication or disassociation frame to the access point. These two frames, however, are sent unencrypted and are not authenticated by the access point. Therefore, an attacker can launch a DoS attack by spoofing these messages and thus disabling the communication between these wireless devices and their access point. We propose an efficient solution based on a one way hard function to verify that a deauthentication frame is from a legitimate station. We implement our solution on some 802.11 devices and the experimental results show that our protocol is highly effective against this DoS attack.

Research paper thumbnail of Dermal damage promoted by repeated low-level UV-A1 exposure despite tanning response in human skin

JAMA dermatology, 2014

Solar UV irradiation causes photoaging, characterized by fragmentation and reduced production of ... more Solar UV irradiation causes photoaging, characterized by fragmentation and reduced production of type I collagen fibrils that provide strength to skin. Exposure to UV-B irradiation (280-320 nm) causes these changes by inducing matrix metalloproteinase 1 and suppressing type I collagen synthesis. The role of UV-A irradiation (320-400 nm) in promoting similar molecular alterations is less clear yet important to consider because it is 10 to 100 times more abundant in natural sunlight than UV-B irradiation and penetrates deeper into the dermis than UV-B irradiation. Most (approximately 75%) of solar UV-A irradiation is composed of UV-A1 irradiation (340-400 nm), which is also the primary component of tanning beds. To evaluate the effects of low levels of UV-A1 irradiation, as might be encountered in daily life, on expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1 and type I procollagen (the precursor of type I collagen). In vivo biochemical analyses were conducted after UV-A1 irradiation of norm...

In order to leverage on the use of Web services, Web service discovery and composition need to be fully supported. Several systems have been proposed to meet this need. However, these systems usually support either discovery or composition of Web services but not both. Moreover, these systems assume the Web services are based on the same ontology. Existing Web service discovery systems are not able to discover heterogeneous ontology Web services. This paper introduces a Web service discovery and composition system which supports Web services based on different OWLS ontologies. The discovery process is executed first in order to search for a single Web service that satisfies a requester. If a single Web service cannot be found, multiple Web services are composed to satisfy the request.
