Edison, being a strong advocate and main promoter for the generation and transmission of power using dc, continued to develop and expand its use in large cities with steam powered, coalfired, central powergenerating stations. These stations initially utilized dc generators driven by reciprocating steam engines. On 17 December 1880, he established the Edison Illuminating Company to build his generating stations, beginning with projects in New York City. To provide support for his business interests, he hired a young, businessminded gentleman from England as his personal secretary. This gentleman was Samuel Insull, who would become directly involved in all matters related to Edison's power companies [2], [3].

It was distributed by The Fredrick Post Company of Chicago, but manufactured by The Hemmi Bamboo Slide Rule Company Ltd. in Japan. The model I obtained was the Versalog 1460 slide rule (slipstick) with the cordovan color leather case (Figure 1). This was the essential basic engineering tool for all mathematical computations required by students in the electrical engineering program at the university. Using the slide rule effectively required applying the fundamental rules of use coupled with one's intuitive engineering skills. You had to figure out where the place value of the decimal point was in your answer since the slide rule didn't keep track of this. Your intuition helped to quickly solve this issue.

That same year, he began working in Yonkers, New York, for Osterheld and Eickemeyer, manufacturers of woodworking machinery and steam and gas engines. His notoriety as a brilliant mathematician and electrical engineer transcended many technical professionals of his time. He enjoyed sharing his ideas and socialized with fellow engineers at professional society meetings, which he often attended.

In establishing a ground system for industrial and commercial buildings before 1968, the NEC advocated employing and using multiple driven ground rods connected to a metallic underground water piping system when present as the main grounding electrode for the protection of the electric installations. A.G. Clark of Los Angeles presented a paper to the American Water Works Association on 26 October 1960, "Grounding of Electric Services to Water Piping Systems," which emphasized his personal experience and frustration in attempting to obtain fewer than 10 _ for each driven ground rod before tying them to the water piping system to establish a minimum resistance to the earth. Surely, there must be a better method for providing a low-resistance ground free from the requirement to connect it to the water piping system, and so my story unfolds.
