Maternal health during pregnancy has been very critical and important for intergenerational healt... more Maternal health during pregnancy has been very critical and important for intergenerational health. According to WHO about half of anemia is believed to be due to iron deficiency anemia. In Ethiopia, the anemia prevalence was reported 22% in pregnant and believed due to IDA. Despite recommendation of iron-folic acid supplementation adherence is still low. The objective of the research was to determine the prevalence of folate and vitamin B-12 deficiency among pregnant and association to anemia during second and third trimester. A cross-sectional hospital-based design was conducted to complete this research. 104 pregnant women were selected based on the current altitude adjusted hemoglobin status after informed consent form is signed from each participant. Serum folates, vitamin B-12 were determined using ECLIA and C-reactive protein by Cobas Integra e411. Serum folate, vitamin B-12 and CRP were defined as deficient below 3 ng/mL, 150 pg/mL and greater than 5 mg/L respectively. Data were coded and analyzed using SPSS 22 version. About half of pregnant women were with formal education. 68.1% of pregnant women were anemic based on cutoff point (Hgb<10.9 g/dL). Study participants deficiencies were observed in 27.9% for folate, 26.9% for vitamin B-12 and 23.1% for CRP based on WHO cutoff point. There is a positive association between folate and hemoglobin, low awareness among elder pregnant but, no association between age and hemoglobin value. There is high prevalence of CRP in comparison to previous studies. Supplementation of vitamin B-12 will be recommended including further research on risk factors including rural residents to strength the finding.

The electrochemical behaviour of ascorbic acid (AA) was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and measured by square wave voltammetry along with that of uric acid (UA) and folic acid (FA). The 2FTNECMNP-modified CPE (2FTNECMNPPE) had electrocatalytic activity towards AA oxidation that was greater than that of bare CPE and CMNP-modified CPE. Based on the results, the linear oxidation peak current was 0.01-60 μM for AA level and the correlation coefficient was 0.9997. According to three times the standard deviation for the blank, the limit of detection was calculated as 0.002 μM. Our results showed an increase in selectivity, stability and reproducibility for 2FTNECMNPPE, which significantly could measure AA, UA and FA levels in AA ampoule, FA tablet and urine samples. It can be concluded that 2FTNECMNPPE has promising capacity in the development of electrochemical sensors.

Different areas alcoholic beverage of Ethiopia was chronicled regarding methanol and ethanol content. The Oromos traditional drinking are coffee (Bunaa) or Buna qalaa and Booka in Gujii Communities. Booka is more than a drink to the Gujii people, but a symbol of their culture and important aspects of their lives, such as their cattle, land and bees. The objective of this research was to identify the indigenous processing methods, physical characteristic and nutritional composition of Booka honey wine in Gujii communities. To complete the research, questionnaire were distributed to gather indigenous knowledge of preparation and samples of Booka were collected from Bule Hora and Dugda Dawwa. Regarding processing method the bladder were carefully removed, cleaned and filled with honey and water. Then, the supernatant ready to drink after 2-3 days. PH and proximate analysis were completed using pH meter and AOAC official methods. Booka drink pH content ranges between 2.903 to 3.123. The moisture, ash, Fat, protein and total carbohydrate were recorded as 82.18, 0.82, 1.43, 7.01 and 8.56% respectively. Except the moisture content all the proximate analyses were significantly higher than the previously documented alcoholic beverage of Ethiopia. Booka honey wine is the first animal origin fermented alcoholic beverage to be introduced scientifically. Further analysis will be required to enhance the Medical importance and toxicity of these traditional drinking.
