In this work the effects of heat treatments on hardness and tribological properties of A356 aluminium alloy obtained by Sub-Liquidus Casting (SLC) were studied. The optimum heat treatment conditions, in which the material presents the maximum hardening and wear resistance values, were determined. Heat treatment conditions investigated included: A356 SLC as cast, T5 and T6. Furthermore, AC-46500 and A6061/T6 were analyzed for comparison. The tribological properties of the samples were investigated by pin-on-disc tests at 5 N and 0.05 and 0.1 m·s -1 in dry conditions. The samples were studied by SEM-EDX techniques in order to determine the wear mechanisms and the determination of the products produced during the tests. The maximum hardness and the lowest dry wear rate were obtained through T6 thermal treatment condition.

CrC-NiCr powders were sprayed using the high velocity oxy fuel thermal spray process (HVOF) to form coatings on steel substrates approximately 150 µm thick. Coatings were heattreated in a range of temperatures between 900 and 1100 °C. The coatings were then evaluated in the as sprayed and heat treated conditions. Inspections by SEM and phase analysis by XRD were carried out. The microindentation technique was applied to measure the variation of the coatings' hardness. Experiments using a tribometer (ball on disc configuration) at room temperature and dry conditions were performed in order to evaluate the friction and wear properties of the coatings. The mechanical properties and wear behaviour of the coatings were correlated with the coating integrity and microstructure.

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2015

ABSTRACT In this work the heat treatment response of SSM processed A356 and A357 casting alloys w... more ABSTRACT In this work the heat treatment response of SSM processed A356 and A357 casting alloys was analysed. The development of a new T6 heat treatment, with solution times less than 30 min has been allowed . In this new short heat treatment, the alloy showed better mechanical properties compared to the same alloy which heat treated in standard conditions (solution time between 6 h and 8 h). This new heat treatment, carried out at the solution temperature of 540 °C, enabled the complete magnesium dissolution, while minimizing the grain growth of the α-phase and the eutectic silicon. Although this experiment was carried out on A356 and A357 aluminium alloys, conformed by Sub-Liquidus-Casting process (SLC), the results may be applied to the components produced with other semi-solid technologies or others Al–Si hardenable alloys that form coherent magnesium inter-metallic precipitates.

In order to improve the wear resistance and reduce the heating of the extrusion die it can be protected with a hard cermet coating. The purpose of this work is to study the high-temperature performance of CrC-CoNiCrAlY coating and explore the potential application of this coating to improve dies used in thixoextrusion processes. A two-layer 75CrC-25CoNiCrAlY coating with a CoNiCrAlY bond-coating was fabricated by the HVOF thermal spray process on a steel substrate. Coatings were heat-treated at a range of temperatures between 900 °C and 1100 °C. The microstructural characterization of the coatings before and after heat treatment was conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The mechanical properties of coatings were determined as a function of the temperature of heat treatment. The bond coat effect on the thermal shock resistance of CrC-CoNiCrAlY coating was analyzed.

However, the studies performed up to date have been conducted, in the laboratory, using small volumes of aluminium. This article aims to establish the application of ultrasound effect in the A357 aluminium-silicon alloy in amounts of about 2 kg of material. The experiments have been conducted with different parameters of ultrasonic treatment, evaluating the microstructure of the slurry quenched from the semi-solid state. The globulization effect of aluminium α phase by ultrasounds is very effective in the area close to the ultrasonic horn tip and the transmission system, but its effect highly reduces in the regions far away from the source of ultrasonic waves.

The aim of this work is to study the application of A357 cast alloy in thixoextrusion processes. This technology offers new possibilities of application for cast alloys and several advantages in from of conventional processes of hot-extrusion: lower pressure, minor friction forces, higher material fluidity and longer tool life. The thixoextrusion was experimented in a pilot plant, at different speeds and temperatures, with an induction furnace and a 400 Tn press. With ingots of A357 as cast, a tool with a ratio of 8.5 and with temperatures of extrusion around 560 °C, it is possible to obtain extrusion speeds more than 3 m•s-1. In all cases, when the speed of extrusion increases, the press of extrusion decreases. The effect of heat treatments and extrusion speed in the microstructure of the extruded product is evaluated.

The MoS2/titanium coating exhibited a better mechanical and tribological behaviour in comparison with pure MoS2 coating on increasing the percentage of humidity.
