The energy requirements for maintaining basic building systems (lighting, cooking, heating, ventilation, cooling) have been analyzed. Passive and active sources of energy production have been analyzed, prosumer buildings have been considered, and methods of obtaining maximum energy in winter periods and avoiding overheating of the building in summer periods have been discussed. Process schemes of using active shadow structures as an integral element with other systems acquiring energy from RES in single-family residential buildings have been presented. Architectural aspects of the use of energy-active shadow structures in residential buildings (single – family houses) have been presented together with alternative solutions. This paper presents process diagrams of the use of energy-a...

Since March 2020, confinement has had a permanent impact on students' perception of studying and on academic lifestyle. Most universities continue teaching online, and most academic facilities, such as lecture and seminar halls, student halls, and dormitories, have been abandoned. Some of them form vast areas in cities that play a major role in the urban structure. The authors have examined the degree and way of occupation of the academic infrastructure before and in time of the pandemic. Evidence and data have been gathered from different universities in Poland and Italy. From their origins, academic campuses can be considered autonomous communities within or on the city limits. In a post-pandemic perspective, the evidence shows that the growing population of students does not mean campus development and that the campuses that have shown the greatest resilience are "open" campuses which are able to share, integrate, and exchange their spaces and facilities with those of the city. The authors conclude that the pandemic will have an impact on the future urban form of academic facilities.

Research paper thumbnail of Open Living Concept in Barn-House Architecture: Single-Family House Case Studies

The term 'barn-house' refers to a house that architecturally refers to barn with a simple, longitudinal form with pitched roof. Originally, barns were converted to houses for practical reasons. Later on, the design aspect was getting more important and any house or any barn were not enough, and so it turned to be a style which can be described as 'designed barnhouse'. The idea appears to be well-recognized: many built houses and house designs represent that style. Also, several online blogs on that subject have been created and published dozens of examples. We may presume that many contemporary architects have either already designed or are aware of designing a barn-house. The reason for that is mostly simplicity of architecture, and lack of details which are common in contemporary architecture. 3 case studies of barn-type house designs have been presented in the article. All of them have been designed by the authors. All the concepts have been designed using synthetic models: physical and virtual. The open space concept can be recognized in all the three case studies: the interior layout seems to be more important than the exterior in that kind of architecture. The authors conclude that some uniform rules can be recognized in barn-type architecture design. However, many concepts have gone far beyond the original barn-house idea. The question is whether that trend can be presumed as distinctive?

There is doubt as to whether some of the existing buildings should be modernized. Since 2000, an increase in the amount of investments in hotel buildings and conference venues in Poland has been observed. The functions and roles of hotels within a city have also changed. The paper presents examples of original projects and realizations of hotel buildings in Silesia. A discussion was also held regarding the issue of adapting and modernizing hotel buildings.

Since 2000 the LED strip lighting became available on the lighting equipment market and slowly became affordable as the typical light source (bulbs) or linear light source (neon bulbs). Today it is implemented everywhere around the globe in exterior and interior design. Technological solutions are even more portable / easy-fixed and take less space and so linear lighting is not extraordinary or exceptional anymore. Research paper thumbnail of Architectural and aesthetic aspects of workspace at home – a new design challenge in the age of pandemic

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering

The article deals with the issues of spatial changes taking place in the office work environment ... more The article deals with the issues of spatial changes taking place in the office work environment during a pandemic. It also raises issues related to the space intended for work at home or in an apartment. At present, the traditional model of office work is undergoing significant transformations. These transformations include, in particular, the spatial aspect. Large office spaces, especially those of the open-plan type, do not work well during a pandemic, as it is difficult to keep an appropriate social distance in them. Therefore, we spend less and less working time, whether for safety reasons or the sanitary and epidemiological regime, for work in the office. This phenomenon is particularly visible in city centers, where many large office buildings have become deserted. We spend more and more time working remotely (home-office). Therefore, it is necessary to adapt the space of our houses and apartments to the conditions in which we live and work today. The very concept of remote w...

A specialized approach to space design for this group of people is becoming a necessity. Particular attention should be paid to the rooms where children with autism spectrum disorders spend a lot of time - to classrooms. The arrangement of space can strongly influence their behavior. Special attention must be paid to the size and proportions of the room, the sense of order in space, proper sunshine, shading and ventilation, as well as to the reduction of detail, the excess of which leads to aggression and lack of concentration in this group of people. Another important element is the proper furnishing of the room, clearly informing about its purpose, or creation of clear zones. However, we are not always able (for procedural and financial reasons) to build complex daycare centers or schools for autistic people, and adaptations of existing rooms impose many limitations. However, despite this, at Tadeusz Kościuszko Primary School No. 11 with Integration Classes in Katowice, an original attempt was made to implement the above assumptions. It includes space zoning, floor differentiation, appropriate lighting, adequate equipment with the elements that are not typical for regular classrooms, as well as color markings and pictograms on the walls, which will be presented in more detail below. All this will undoubtedly lead to better comfort of use.

Exterior layout and interior functional layout are the main drivers for the final result of a design. Models are an important medium for presentation of architectural designs and play a pivotal role in explaining the first idea to people and potential clients. Although 3D models have unlimited possibilities of representation, some people cannot understand or 'feel' the designed space. The authors try to test how to combine the interior and the exterior in a single synthetic model. Several models of different houses have been presented in the article. All the case studies were developed with physical models, 3D models, and 2D hand sketches. The main focus of the work with the models was to achieve a coherent vision for future feeling of open space in designed houses. The research shows how synthetic models might be helpful in the design process. The resear...
