This paper present a through bolt connection in HSS column. This connection meets building code standards that require the moment resistant connections to deflect and absorb energy resulting from gravity and seismic loads. Connection through bolts is installed and pretension to provide the connection strength needed to make a beam – column moment rigid zone. A rigid joint is typically used to resist lateral forces by holding columns and beams fixed in relation to one another. With bolted moment frames using HSS columns, a through – bolt connection could be used to secure the beam and end plate to the column. However, when multiple columns and beams are used to span a length of building, the use of through-bolts would necessities aligning multiple beams s...
In design practice of many countries, seismic analysis and proportioning of structures are usuall... more In design practice of many countries, seismic analysis and proportioning of structures are usually based upon linear elastic analysis due to reduced seismic forces by response coefficient; R. Setback structures are one of the most popular shapes of the constructed buildings. In setback structures, the shape and proportions of the building have a major effect on distribution of earthquake forces as they work their way through the building. On the other hand, geometric configuration has a profound effect on the structural-dynamic response of a building. Therefore, when a building has irregular features, such as asymmetric in height or vertical discontinuity, the traditional assumptions used in development of seismic criteria for regular buildings may not be applicable. Inelastic seismic behavior of these types of structures seems to be quite different from the regular steel moment resisting structures in which the overall ductility is localized at beam-ends. In order to investigate the seismic behavior and estimate the Response Coefficient of those structures, nonlinear static analysis (pushover) are used for three categories of setback structures namely low rise, medium rise and high rise buildings with different setbacks in their height. The Response Coefficient are calculated and compared with those taken from regular type of moment frame structures.

High rise building with general pyramid geometry have been increasing used in new development zon... more High rise building with general pyramid geometry have been increasing used in new development zones. It is seen that even in high prone areas, there are many high rise building under design and construction. On the other hand, in relevant seismic codes there are no specific criteria for such type of structural systems. The structural systems in these buildings are moment resisting frames with or without bracing frames or shear walls. The structural elements are usually composed of beams and vertical columns in middle part and inclined columns in side faces of buildings. The inclined column element in this type of structure makes the structural behavior in different manner. Nevertheless, there are some special structural aspects of these building, especially due to earthquake events; one of the most important obscurity manners is extremely torsional effects structures of asymmetric pyramid bui Iding especially in lower stories. In this paper the results of numerous analytical studies performed for asymmetric, symmetric pyramid structures compared with regular structure and compare to codes requirement are shown.
