Influence of Family and Social Attributes on Caregivers Feeding Practices in Northern Region of Ghana, 2019

This qualitative study of the influence of family and social attributes on caregivers' feeding pr... more This qualitative study of the influence of family and social attributes on caregivers' feeding practices explores how socioeconomic and cultural factors affect caregivers' feeding practices in the Northern Region of Ghana. The study further assessed how mealtime structure, feeding styles, and food availability and accessibility affected caregivers' feeding practices. Seventy-nine caregivers of children under five years in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality and Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District in the Northern Region of Ghana participated in eight focus group discussions. The results showed that caregivers fed foods that were available and accessible at the family level. The results further revealed that caregivers adopted the authoritative feeding style and caregivers' employment, income status and family mealtime structure seem to affect caregivers feeding practices. These findings have important implications for developing strategies to curb the high malnutrition prevalence in the study areas. Providing educational programmes by the Ghana Health Service and their partners would go a long way to improve good feeding practices and improve the health status of children in the study areas and Ghana as a country.

The study also examined caregivers' adherence to the WHO breastfeeding and introduction of solid foods and semi-solid foods at six months guidelines and the nutritional status of children under five years in the Northern Region of Ghana. Descriptive survey with cross sectional design was employed with the use of multi stage sampling technique at Child Welfare Clinics to obtain 495 caregivers-child pairs for the study. A structured questionnaire was employed to obtain the primary data and charts, tables, texts were employed to present the primary data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in analysing data and the results presented in charts and tables. Overall, 25.3% of 495 infants had been exclusively breastfed for 6 months. There was a significant relationship between caregivers educational level and adherence to breastfeeding guidelines (P=0.004). From the results, 30.7% of the children were underweight, 20.2% of them being wasted and 43.0% and 8.7% respectively being stunted and overweight. Intensive health education by health workers should be done to improve good nutrition in the study areas.

The paper relied solely on analysis of data for Northern Region of Ghana, collected as part of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Feed the Future population baseline survey conducted in 2012. Multiple Linear Regression Model was used in examining mothers’ participation in intra-household decision making on children’s weight-for-age, height-for-age and weight-for-height which were used as proxies for children’s nutritional status. Results of the analysis revealed that, the Region is still far from achieving the MDG 1 target of attaining 1.8% malnutrition prevalence rate, as stunting, underweight and wasting prevalence rates among children in the region were found to be 27%, 25% and 13% respectively. The analysis also found mothers’ participation in intra-household decision making, ownership and control of household resources as significant in influencing positively children’s nutritional status. Increasing participation and power of women in intra-household decision making process are imperative in improving children nutritional status and reducing malnutrition prevalence among children under five years. It is therefore recommended that programmes and projects aimed at promoting sustainable nutritional wellbeing among children should consider empowering mothers of children so as to promote their status and barging power in intra-household decision making process.

The constructs for teaching Problem Based Learning are very different from traditional classroom ... more The constructs for teaching Problem Based Learning are very different from traditional classroom or lecture teaching and often requires more preparation time and resources to support small group learning. This review is to assess the experiences of medical students about Problem Based Learning. This review is also to explore the experiences of medical students regarding their concerns and challenges about Problem Based Learning; assess medical students' perceived advantages and disadvantages about Problem Based Learning and explore medical students' knowledge and skills gained through Problem Based Learning. A thorough search of peer reviewed and grey literature from 1987 to 2016 yielded 76 publications that were synthesised and analysed. This review found out that Problem Based Learning could develop the flexible knowledge base of medical students; develop medical students' effective problem solving skills; develop medical students' self-directed lifelong learning skills. This review therefore concludes that the Problem Based Learning curriculum appears to be more effective in teaching medical courses as compared to other experiential approaches. More research is needed to identify more effective and efficient ways of improving the teaching of Problem Based Learning in Medical Schools.
