Despite the huge financial cost on the part of the government and the multinational oil companies, the perpetrators of this business continue to expand their operations in the creeks. Illegal oil bunkering is now a booming business in the Niger Delta. It is believed to involve the different local militant groups in creeks, commodity traders, military personnel, international businessmen, and some indigenous oil servicing companies. The successes of illegal oil bunkering in Nigeria have been ascribed to both local and national interest as a result of the profits from this illegal oil business. This study critically examines the key actors of illegal oil bunkering; the root causes and consequences of illegal oil bunkering, and the solutions to the identified challenges.

The specific objectives were to determine the rural awareness of the people to the consequences of the pollution of their land; and to find the linkages between the health challenges in the communities and the polluted environment. Employing the survey design method, 12 oil bearing communities were purposively selected across the four Local Government Areas that constitute Ogoniland. 400 questionnaires were distributed as the means of data collection, of which 385 were retrieved. The analyses of the questionnaires were through simple descriptive statistics methods such as frequency counts, percentages and mean scores. The result revealed that the people of Ogoni are fully aware of the consequences of pollution to their health. Also the result revealed that the short term effects of pollution are now in manifestation among the people (like chest pain, coughing fatigue, anxiety etc.); and some are now suffering from the long term exposures to the polluted environment with depression, skin cancer, brain damage, etc already visible among the people.

Many of the school children are no longer zealous about their academic activities, as their performances in school are always very poor. It has been reported that the children's poor performance in school is closely linked with several health and mental challenges suffered by these children in the highly polluted areas. Methods: The study comprises of 383 primary school teachers selected from 8 rural communities in the four (4) Ogoni Local Government Areas (Gokana, Tai, Eleme and Khana) in Rivers State where massive environmental pollution has been reported. Structured questionnaires were used to Original Research Article David et al.; JAMMR, 29(11): 1-13, 2019; Article no.JAMMR.48839 2 collect the data from the teachers on the children's exposure to oil pollution; self-rated mental illnesses and behavioural symptoms among the school children, perception to petroleum pollution and mental illnesses. Results: The results revealed that the signs of mental illnesses like anxiety disorder, attention-deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorder, mood disorder, schizophrenia and eating disorder were noticeable among the school children. The children also exhibited behavioural challenges such as extreme fear, difficulty in concentrating, self-imposed injuries, aggressive behaviour, avoiding other classmates and poor academic performances. The field survey further revealed that mental illnesses and behavioural challenges were common in areas of massive petroleum pollution of the environment. Other causes of these illnesses were revealed to be poverty and psychoactive substance use. Conclusion: It was concluded that constant exposures of the children to environmental pollution is associated with decreasing neuroplasticity of the brain.

ABSTRACT
The people of Niger Delta has suffered several years of negligence and marginalism through improper exploration of petroleum and distribution of the its products by the multinational oil companies and the government; which has necessitated attacks from the locals on government forces, oil workers and oil installation sites; as a means of expressing their grievances. The oil crisis in the region has lead to the disruption of oil exploration and reduction of revenues accruing to the state from the sales of oil. These crises have lead to the multiplication of several criminal vices that has turned the region into a state of disarray. The military and the militants are currently benefiting from the booming business of illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and diversion of refined petroleum products running through the pipes from the refineries. This study critically examines the history of oil exploration, origin and consequences of the oil crisis in the Niger Delta and how the government can put an end to this menace.

challenges like global warning, climate change, ozone layer depletion, habitat loss, species extinction and flooding; results
from unplanned housing projects, bush burning, deforestation, oil spillages, oil theft, gas flaring, sewage disposal, overgrazing,
industrial waste and emissions. Every activities of man that is done by an environmentally illiterate person, that is not
conscious of the consequences of his or her actions can lead to the depletion and destruction of the natural resources in the
environment. Man continues to suffer from all the consequences of his actions on the environment; it will also take only man
through Environmental Adult Education to solve these environmental problems. Environmental Adult Education identifies the
activities of man that destroys the environment; educate man on how to use the available natural resources in a sustainable
manner and also suggest alternative ways for development. Thus, Environmental Adult Education is the best tool that can
enable man to live friendly with his environment and enabling ecological balance.

Government Areas in Ogoni of Rivers State. The fact of deforestation, agricultural practice, industrialization and oil spill leading to habitat
loss in Rivers State has raise questions of great concern to stakeholders, particularly communities who have suffered species extinction. The purpose of this study is to find out the human activities that lead to habitat loss, examine the adverse effects of habitat loss on the environment and man; and determine ways through which environmental adult education can minimize the occurrence of habitat loss.
Hence, three objectives and one null hypothesis were used for this study. Survey research design was adopted, questionnaires were used for
data collection. Responses to the questionnaire were analyzed using mean and grand mean for all the research questions and Z-test for the
hypothesis. The result of this study revealed that the Ogoni people are instrumental to the destruction of their God-given environment and
the people that are involved in the act of deforestation, bush burning, oil spills, carrying out bunkering business, and practicing artisanal
refining of crude oil which degrades the environment are mostly adults. It was recommended that there should massive environmental adult education to curb habitat loss and further environmental degradation.

The population of about 311 different forming colonies were recorded in the study area; out of which 18 distinctive colonies were identified based on their morphological observation. From the selected isolates, 10 of them were assumed to be degraders because they form maximum clear zones on the mineral salt media. The results of the analysis show that notable number of microorganism of which seven bacteria and seven fungi were isolated and identified. The bacteria are Micrococcus Original Research Article Bodo et al.; JGEESI, 21(3): 1-8, 2019; Article no.JGEESI.48996 2 luteus, Streptococcus lactic, Streptococcus epidemidis, Streptococcus faecalis, Clostridium sprogenes, Aerococcus viridems, and Bacillus anthracis. The fungi are Articulosspara inflate, Dendospora erecta, Aspergillus niger, Liodioderium Species, Geotichrum albdum, Aspergillus funigatus and Sreptothric atrax. On the strength of the result, it is inferred that microorganisms are associated with bioremediation and can be used for environmental and petroleum cleanup exercise in an oil spilled site.

The result revealed that the government has made serious effects to curb the problem of habitat loss through several environmental programmes, but the community dweller still embark on massive destruction their environment in search for fuel sources like firewood. It is recommended that the government should make the prices of fuel cheap to avoid the rural dweller from going often for alternative source of energy.
