The proposed solution is based on a consequent use of the object model and the availibility of lightweight processes. The flexibility of our approach is demonstrated by several examples.

The focus of the investigation is the prediction of overbooking rates in order to avoid a situation where an aircraft departs with empty seats when passengers who have booked seat do not participate in the flight. The neural network proposed to solve the problem is an extension of the forward-only counterpropagation model. The network learns to approximate the mapping between the input data (the number of booked seats for each reservation class at distinct time periods prior to departure) and the desired output (the number of no-shows). The trained network is then used to make the predictions for the future. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by an efficient implementation

We present an approach for automatically determining the control parameters of a machine used in a manufacturing environment for producing cookies and other pastry. The proposed solution is based on augmenting a genetic algorithm with elements of fuzzy logic, since either of them alone could not produce satisfactory results. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated by presenting experimental results obtained in a series of test productions. The tests show that high quality cookies can be produced in a very short time

Research paper thumbnail of Memory Coherence in a Distributed Persistent Storage Architecture

Since in this environment all objects, regardless of their sizes and lifetimes, reside in a large, network-wide single-level store and are uniformly accessed via a remote paging protocol, it is important that the persistent store is always in a consistent state. The concurrency of conflicting operations on objects and failures such as node, disk or network crashes threaten the integrity of information contained in the store. The main focus of our work is to architecturally support replication mechanisms at the virtual memory level in order to achieve reliability and availability for all objects in the system. Our solution to the problem of maintaining the mutual consistency of replicated objects is based on a page coherence scheme for synchronizing access to replicas combined with a voting-based checkpointing protocol for ensuring their integrity in the presence of failures. It will be shown how to implement the proposed approach in a network of MONADS-PCs.

The networks investigated are two-layered architectures with linear neurons, and variants of Hebbian learning rules are used to reduce the dimensionality of the inputs while preserving a maximum of information in the output units.

Scope, lifetime, and sharing are orthogonal concepts applicable to any type of object. In order to maintain the integrity of important objects and to improve the overall system reliability, the transaction mechanism can successfully be applied to a persistent object system. This paper discusses several alternatives for the realization of transactions in such an environment. It also presents new techniques for object-oriented concurrency control and recovery, based on the notion of layered transactions.

The proposed network is a hierarchically organized, multi-layer feedforward architecture which exploits the structural properties of artificially generated fractals. The backpropagation algorithm is employed for training the network. The network is implemented in parallel on a multi-transputer system. It is able to classify all non-noisy test patterns correctly; fractal patterns where 1/ f and random noise are added take longer for the network to converge, but up to a certain signal-to-noise ratio they are also classified correctly.

In this volume, international media scholars and computer scientists present their projects, varying from powerful film-historical databases to automatic video analysis software, discussing their application of digital tools and reporting on their results. This book is the first publication of its kind and a helpful guide to both media scholars and computer scientists who intend to use digital tools in their research, providing information on applications, standards, and problems.
