Since the introduction of excision arthoplasty in veterinary medicine the question of indication ... more Since the introduction of excision arthoplasty in veterinary medicine the question of indication is often asked. The maximum of the patient's body weight up to which surgery should be performed is another discussed problem. A long-term study from January 1985 to July 1995 at the Veterinary Surgery Department at the Justus-Liebig-University was carried out to answer these questions (222 patients, 155 dogs and 67 cats). Trauma and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease came first in the list of indications. In case of postoperative problems trouble with lameness after high activity, long rest or at the time of change in weather could be seen. No owner of an animal thought that the life quality of his animal was restricted by this occasional problems. At a body weight over 30 kg the occasional problems were more often seen but every patient had less clinical problems after surgery than before. In this group no deterioration was seen.

A number of large caseous lesions were present within the lung which was partially collapsed. The bronchomediastinal lymph nodes were grossly enlarged and contained caseous foci (Fig 3). There were also a few smaller caseous lesions in the liver. Ziehl-Neelsen stained smears of lung and lymph node lesions revealed many acid-fast bacilli suggestive of mycobacteria. Samples of lung and lymph node were submitted to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Weybridge for mycobacteria culture. M bovis was isolated from these tissues. Another female llama from this herd which had been sold in the autumn of 1998 to another premises only five miles away, also died on the same day as the one submitted to the Langford Regional Laboratory. An 'on farm' postmortem examination was carried out. This eight-year-old animal was in good bodily condition, but had similar although not so extensive gross lesions. Clostridial enterotoxaemia was thought to have been the ultimate cause of death. However, M bovis was also isolated from the lung and lymph node lesions. There was only one other llama present on this premises and this had also been recently bought in.The llamas had no contact with cattle at this location, but badgers were known to be present in the area. However, as the affected llama had been at this site for only a few months and as the tuberculous lesions were well developed, it was concluded that infection was likely to have taken place on the original premises. The M bovis isolates from these animals were demonstrated to be the same spoligotype as that of isolates from cattle and badgers in the surrounding area (R. G. Hewinson, personal communication). Movement restrictions have since been placed on these herds and limited tuberculin testing carried out, although tuberculin testing in llamas has not yet been validated. These cases confirm that llamas are susceptible to bovine TB. It should now be a differential diagnosis for llamas in cases of illthrift with or without obvious respiratory involvement, especially in areas where TB is present in cattle. However, the confirmation of bovine TB in live camelids continues to be a problem.

A method for the preparation of plasma membranes from smooth muscle of the uterus of Bos taurus is described. 2. 2. The plasma membranes have been isolated by discontinuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation without the use of salt extractions. 3. 3. Steps of purification were controlled by electron microscopy and enzyme analyses. 4. 4. 5′-Nucleotidase, phosphodiesterase, (K + −Mg 2+ )-ATPase and (Na + −K + )-ATPase could be enriched in our preparation. 5. 5. No evidence was obtained for a membrane-bound ocytocinase activity and for 3′,5′-nucleotide-phosphodiesterase activity in the plasma membranes from bovine uterus muscle.
