Based on the reanalysis of sustainable development concepts, it is supported, as first, by the use of a multi-discipline theoretical and methodological framework which is made explicit in an evolving picture of the relation between the human being and nature towards the current development model. In the following, from the social exclusion theoretical background, one searches to place in a historical context the phenomenon of collecting recyclable material and the structuring of the sector as an organized social movement, in order to verify in which position the National Movement of Recyclable Material Pickers (NMRP) is included as a social current movement. In order to compare the action of that movement to the conquests obtained in field of public policies promotion, legal and government actions aimed at those social actors were evaluated. Still, one searched for the identification how, in the field of economic organization, the recyclable material pickers promote cooperative and productive structures based on cooperative economy, as a strategy to guide the productive organization process in the form of cooperatives and associations of pickers. Using a qualitative methodology for the systemic analysis of the social and political-institutional dimension, and a quantitative one for the productive dimension, interviews were made inside pickers organizations, recycling companies and public federal and municipal agencies, as well as a social and historical research, which was done with several secondary sources. The results obtained from the physical, economical and market efficiency analysis, in a cooperative context, and from the action of the NMRP in the steering of current public policies point to a social efficiency in a free developing environment in the cooperatives and associations of recyclable material pickers in Brazil. One concludes that the emergency of those new social actors in the urban space effectively contributes to the sustainable development and that those trends presented by the process of organizing pickers are fruitful for the society in the social, economic and environmental fields.

This study aims to evaluate quantitatively the process of production and processing of waste and the quality of compost produced. Composting is an aerobic biological process controlled treatment and stabilization of organic wastes for the production of compound fertilizer. The experiment was conducted in open court, each cell with 4.5 m³, using scraps of fruits and vegetables. The experimental design was randomized with three treatments and three repetitions. It was found that composting promoted heating cycles that allow the decomposition of organic matter, reducing the volume, producing a compound with potential for use in agriculture, without harming the environment. The study reaffirms the importance of environmental and economic recycling of composted organic matter contained in solid waste in this and other supply centers. Keys words - supply centers, composting, solid waste.
