Methods: A total of 300 OSF patients' quality of life (QoL) data were obtained using OHRQoL-OSF and global self ratings of oral health and overall wellbeing. The socioeconomic status (SES) of participants was analyzed by using modified Kuppuswamy scale. Results: OSF patients with lower SES had worse OHRQoL as compared with those with middle and upper SES (p < 0.001). The household income of the family was found to be strongly associated with poor OHRQoL. Conclusion: Socioeconomic characteristics should be considered in the holistic management of OSF as it has been strongly associated with the OHRQoL of these patients.

Sialolithiasis often occur at any age, but it is most common in middle aged adults in submandibular gland with 80-90 % occurrence, followed by parotid, accounting for 5-15 % and about 2-5 % in sublingual gland. Majority of salivary stones are asymptomatic or cause minimal discomfort, large stones may interfere with the flow of saliva and cause pain and swelling. In this case report a 40-year-old male with a large calculus in the submandibular gland duct is presented. The calculus was roughly oval and it was remarkable for its size.

Objective: To assess the usefulness of der- matoglyphics, as a non-invasive early predicator in RAS, since genetics plays a role in both. Materials and methods: This case control study comprised of 40 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis compared to 30 control subjects of similar age and sex. All subjects were investigated for their dermatoglyphic patterns of both hands, which were obtained by smearing the ink uniformly over the palm and fingers and pressing the hands firmly against the good quality paper. Qualitative analysis of prints was done for arches, loops and whorls and quantitative analysis included Total Finger Ridge Count (TFRC) and atd angle. Fisher's Exact Tests were used to evaluate the significance between recurrent aphthous stomatitis and the dermatoglyphic features. Results: Among various dermatoglyphic parameters analyzed, recurrent aphthous stomatitis pa- tients showed 9% arches, 62% loops and 29% whorls as the finger ridge configuration. In comparing the

Aim: To evaluate association of socioeconomic risk factor with patients delay in presentation of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). Material and Methods: Thorough case history of 120 histopathologically confirmed OSCC patients was taken and were categorized according to TNM staging. Their SES was assessed by Aggarwal OP et al (2005) scale. Patients delay in presentation was calculated by measuring the time between the onset of the first symptoms of OSCC and the first consultation with primary health care provider. Association of socioeconomic status (SES) with patients delay in presentation was sought. Observations and Results: Out of 120 OSCC patients, there were 04 (3.33%) patients from stage II, 31(25.83%) from stage III, 85 (70.83%) from stage IV. Thirteen (10.80%) patients reported within 3 months of onset of the first symptoms, 14 (11.66%) patients reported upto 3 months, 72 (60.00%) reported between 3-6 months, 20 (16.66%) between 6-9 months and 14 (11.66%) between 9-12 months. Association of clinical staging and patient delay was sought by subjecting to chi square test, and the x2 value was 43.80, P = 0.0001, suggesting statistically significant difference. An association of clinical staging, SES and period of patient's first presentation was also carried out and data subjected to chi square test which was statistically significant in all the subgroups of SES. Conclusion: From this study, it can be concluded that there is significant association of socioeconomic status with patients delay in presentation of oral squamous cell carcinoma

Background: TSC is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome exhibiting multiple hamartomatous proliferations that may involve multiple organs such as the brain, kidney, heart, eyes, lungs and skin. Oral manifestations such as enamel pitting and fibromatous growth of the gingiva are commonly seen in patients with TSC. Report: A 16-year-old female patient presented with a painless interdental gingival growth in the maxillary left incisor and canine region that bled occasionally. Associated findings were adenoma sebaceum (angiofibromas) on the face, a Shagreen patch on the lumbosacral region, ash leaf spots on the trunk, and subangual fibromas (Koenen's tumor) on the nails of fingers and toes. The final diagnosis of TSC was made on the basis of the clinical findings of the skin, computerized tomography (CT) findings of the brain and kidney, ultrasonographic findings of kidney, and a histopathologic evaluation of the gingival growth which met the major and minor criteria required for a diagnosis of TSC. Summary: This case report is a good example of the complex nature of patients with TSC. The diagnosis and management of these patients varies depending on the specific presentation of the disease. Due to relatively low radiation doses and excellent spatial resolution, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is being utilized more frequently in dental-maxillofacial imaging. For the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ disorders, an imaging examination is required. The osseous compartment is visualized using conventional CT, and CBCT and soft tissue imaging are extremely well appreciated on MRI. However, conventional TMJ imaging has its limitations due to its two-dimensional view and adjacent anatomical superimposition. TMJ imaging helps analyze the cortical and the bony compartment's trabaculae and assess the degree of skeletal abnormalities. TMJ imaging protocols are also used to evaluate treatment responses. CBCT is the three-dimensional imaging of the bony compartment and joint space and the morphology of the bone visualized by removing superimposition and distortion. Compared to multislice CT, CBCT produces high-resolution multiplanar images with a reduced dose of radiation. The role of CBCT imaging in determining the normal bony anatomy and pathological changes is appropriately delineated in this paper. This work will focus on the use of CBCT for the examination of TMJ in various patient categories, including those with osteoarthritis, remodeling, ankylosis, trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, synovial chondromatosis, and other intracapsular pathologies.

Histological sections also show the mast cell infiltration in submucosa which may indicate their possible role in this entity. Abundant availability of biochemicals in mast cells like histamine and serine proteases like chymase may be released and play specific pathways in the disease pathophysiology. Possibly, if the histamine release has some part to play, diamine oxidase may also be found to have a relationship as it metabolizes histamine. The present study is proposed to identify the presence of chymase, histamine, and diamine oxidase in both, serum as well as tissue by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) respectively. This study may provide probable insight into the mast cell-related chemicals and their association with OSMF.

It is concerned with the application of science and technology in human identification, requiring the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team. Determining the racial affinity of an unknown individual from dentition for identification is indeed a difficult endeavor. However, there are some dental characteristics which are predominant in one of racial groups, and these contribute important indicators in the identification process. Forensic anthropologists most often provide details of bone studies, but forensic dentists can assist in the process. The determination of sex and ancestry can be accessed from shape and form of the skull, especially from skull appearance. Forensic dentists can determine race within the three major groups: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. Additional characteristics of teeth, such as cusps of Carabelli, shovel-shaped incisors, and multicusped premolars, can also assist in the determination of ancestry.

The objective of this study was to compare the convergent and discriminative properties of the condition-specific OHRQoL-OSF and generic OHIP-14 in OSF patients. Methods The OHRQoL-OSF and OHIP-14 instruments were administered concurrently to 300 clinically diagnosed OSF patients. Analysis of both the instruments was carried out by using descriptive statistics. The internal consistency and reproducibility of the instruments were assessed using Cronbach's alpha and intra-class correlation coefficient respectively. The convergent and discriminative validity were then determined and compared. Results The OHRQoL-OSF and OHIP-14 exhibited good psychometric properties for internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha > 0.88) and reproducibility (ICC > 0.85). A positive associations were observed between both the instruments, but a high prevalence of patients with no impact was noted using the OHIP-14. Both the instruments were able to discriminate between patients with different clinical stages of OSF, but OHRQoL-OSF was more responsive in the early stages of OSF. The OHRQoL-OSF demonstrated greater sensitivity for 'discomfort and functional impairment'. Conclusions The condition-specific OHRQoL-OSF identified OSF patients with impaired oral health-related QoL more easily with greater discriminative properties. To better understand patient reported experiences in OSF, these results may guide the choice of instrument in future researches and surveys.

We wanted to assess maxillo-mandibular implant sites by Digitized Volumetric Tomography. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 36 implant sites in 25 healthy subjects. All the sites were evaluated by measuring the height and width of the available alveolar ridge, the proximity to maxillary sinus as well as inferior alveolar canal, the width of the cortical plates and by evaluating visibility of mandibular canal by using Digitized Volumetric Tomography. RESULTS 23 (63.88%) were maxillary implant sites and 13 (36.11%) were mandibular sites. The presence of type A bone was found to be maximum at implant sites. Out of 20 maxillary posterior implant sites, 2 (10%) sites belonged to SA1 group, 7 (35%) sites to SA2 group, 8 sites to SA3 group and 3 sites to SA4 group. At 8 sites, mandibular canal was clearly visible. Significant difference is observed between buccal cortical width of maxilla and mandible (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Digitized Volumetric Tomography successfully showed the presence and proximity of vital surrounding structures and anatomical variations. This can be used in assessment of implant site and thus helps in successful implant placement with excellent prognosis.

Monitoring the widespread consequences of OSMF requires interventions in at-risk persons ideally earlier the disease becomes aggressive. Iron and vitamin C have been widely studied in recent years to judge whether they have any modifying effects in the etiology of precancer and cancer. Aim of study was to evaluate levels of iron and vitamin C in serum and saliva in patients with OSMF. Methods: Study group comprised of 66 patients, out of which 22 cases of clinically diagnosed OSMF patients and 22 cases of betelnut habitual without OSMF and 22 cases of age and sex matched control healthy patients were recruited. Estimation of Iron by Ferrozine method and vitamin C by 2-4 dinitrophenylhydrazine method in serum and saliva was carried out by using Spectrophotometer. The statistical analysis was done. Results: Level of iron and vitamin C in serum and saliva was significantly decreased in OSMF patients when compared to betelnut habitual and controls group which were statistically significant. Conclusion: The present study, all the cases of OSMF showed decrease in iron and vitamin C levels which suggests that the iron and vitamin C plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of OSMF. In group II (Betel nut habituals without OSMF) patients showed decrease in iron and vitamin C levels which suggest that, betel nut quid with or without tobacco consumption may alter the serum and salivary levels of iron and vitamin C and plays an important role in the advancement of OSMF. Therefore regular monitoring of betel nut habituals should also be carried out because they are at higher risk of developing OSMF in future. Study indicates that saliva also may be used as a potential non-invasive diagnostic tool to evaluate the iron and vitamin C in OSMF patients. Estimation of iron and vitamin C in OSMF patients would help in management, in developing therapies based on the trace element expression.
