I am very pleased to be able to report that the Association has received a small grant from The Ford Foundation, $25,000 for a period of fifteen months, to support and strengthen this office and its capacity to reach and serve persons and groups working in women\u27s studies. This grant will make it possible to prepare and distribute membership and other Association materials throughout the country, will allow the Association\u27s Steering Committee to meet and to communicate more effectively with in the organization, and will provide some resources by for the initial planning stages of several major Association projects. One of which is our First National Convention

It is also important to note that Houston is one of a number of gifted contemporary writers who are expanding the vistas of western American literature (although it appears that few critics have understood this). His characters are westerners in the West, and in this novel, as in his earlier A Native Son of the Golden West (1971), at least one character has been involved in westering: Leona Doyle is a product of the so-called Dust Bowl migration to California. Houston is much concerned with what the western movement has meant and means, but he is too contemporary a writer to concern himself with traditional subjects of classic western writing. In his work western value systems are tested against today’s dilemmas. While Continental Drift is probably not “the ultimate California novel” that one reviewer suggested, it is an interesting, i...

This era of CMC resembles other ages-particularly manuscript eras-when changes in communication media restructured human thought, how communicators and teachers conceived of and constructed texts, and the processes by which they mode sense of texts and imparted them with authority. By studying the oreas of similarity between the rabbinic and medieval manuscript eras and our own time, technical communicators may come to an understanding of how changes in technology sparked shifts in the social and intellectual dynamics of text construction. And by looking ot these earlier traditions and the environments in which texts were studied, we may develop a deeper understanding of some of the intellectual, ethical, and educational implications of texts in this CMC era. authority authorship computer-mediated communication memory technical communication Human history has entered what Sherry Turkle called a liminal era, when "old structures have broken down and new ones have not yet been created" (as cited in McCorduck, 1996, p. 157). This moment, like others in the past, has been brought about by a change in communication technology, and like earlier liminal periods, this is a time of great tension and opportunity. Digitalization of information, which computers made possible, is responsible for the transformation we face just as the invention of the alphabet, the development of writing, and the advent of printing brought about earlier changes.

Increasingly, the confusion causedby this term has created difficulties for those of us involved in teaching about and doing research on computer software, interactive video, and other educational technologies to which it has been applied. The difficulty of defining user-friendly results from the fact that software, like all messages, has two components--the content itself and the format in which the content is presented.l So far, the concept of user friendliness has been applied both to format and to content rather indiscriminately. We call a software application user-friendly if its format can be used easily by a computer novice. But we also call it user friendly if the persona used as part of the software's content talks nicely to us once we get the program up and running. Content and format

Video, computer, electronic-publishing, and telecom munications technologies have challenged traditional print dominance among the media. As schools nationwide attempt to meet the needs of a new generation of technical-communication leaders, it is appropriate that we ex plore what distinguishes a comprehensive graduate program in this new field. By examining leading programs, assessing industry's needs, and sketching a profile of an ideal graduate communicator, we are able to set goals for curricu lum, staff, facilities, resources, support, and administration of a state-of-the- art graduate program in technical communication.
