A descriptive survey was conducted on assessment of Perceived stress and coping strategies among ... more A descriptive survey was conducted on assessment of Perceived stress and coping strategies among senior citizens living in Bankura block 1 and Bankura municipality ward-20, west Bengal with 104 senior citizens aging 61 years and above selected by simple random sampling technique. The objectives were to assess the level of stress of senior citizens, to find out coping strategies adopted by them, to ascertain relationship between stress and coping strategies, and to determine the association between stress and adopted coping strategies with selected demographic variables. Structured interview schedule was used to collect demographic characteristics. Standardized PSS Scale was used to assess level of stress and standardized brief COPE Scale was used for measuring adopted coping strategies. The study results depicted that majority (71.16%) of senior citizens in urban and most (84.62%) of senior citizens in rural had moderate stress whereas 28.84% in urban, 15.38% in rural senior citizens had severe stress. Majority of senior citizens in urban (61.55%) and rural (63.47%) were having adopted moderate coping strategies, religious coping strategies was use both in urban and rural. Stress was negatively correlated (-0.62) with adopted coping strategies at 0.01 level of significance. Stress and coping strategies were significantly associated with age, occupation, socioeconomic status, type of familial support, chronic physical illness. The present study was limited to age up to 80 years of senior citizens. The scope of generalization of findings was limited to present study population. The findings will enable nursing personnel to become more observant in health care services. An experimental study can be done to reduce stress among senior citizens.

A descriptive comparative survey was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude towards menta... more A descriptive comparative survey was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude towards mental illness among young and older people in Karakdanga, Bankura, West Bengal. The study is aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude toward mental illness among young and older people. Participants (n1=55, n 2=55) were selected by simple random sampling. Knowledge was assessed by a valid, reliable structured knowledge questionnaire and attitude was assessed by the standardized tool CAMI (Community Attitudes towards Mentally Ill). The findings revealed that the mean knowledge score (17.32) of young was higher than older people (10.89) which is evident by the 't' value of 9.36 [1.98 with df (108), p<0.05] The mean attitude score(17.32) of young was higher than older people (10.89) which is evident by the 't' value of 21.68 [1.98 with df (108)] at a 0.01 level of significance. A strongly positive relationship exists between knowledge and attitude towards mental illness (r=0.74).

A true experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a video assisted teachin... more A true experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a video assisted teaching program on knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease among adults in a selected community of Bankura, West Bengal. The objectives were to assess the knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease among adults, to evaluate the effectiveness of video assisted teaching program and to find out the association of pre-test knowledge of adults with selected demographic variables. Pre-test post-test control group design with 45 adults in each of control and experimental group were selected by simple random sampling method who were fulfil the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using structured knowledge questionnaire. Video on Alzheimer's disease was developed and validated by the experts. Study findings revealed that the video assisted teaching programme was effective in increasing the knowledge as evident from the mean difference ('t'=11.87 df (44); p=0.01) of pre-test and post-test knowledge score. There was no significant association between pre-test knowledge score and selected demographic variables like age, marital status but there was association between the previous knowledge score and educational qualification and occupation of adults. It was recommended that further study could be undertaken using large sample in different other settings. The study has implications for mental health nursing practice, education, administration, and research.

A descriptive research study was conducted nonadherence and reasons of nonadherence to drug regim... more A descriptive research study was conducted nonadherence and reasons of nonadherence to drug regimen among schizophrenic patients at psychiatric OPD, BSMC & H, Bankura, West Bengal to investigate the nonadherence and reasons of nonadherence to drug regimen among schizophrenic patients and to find out its association with selected demographic variables among schizophrenic patients at psychiatric OPD, BSMC & H, Bankura, West Bengal. Data were collected from 120 samples by simple random sampling using semi structured demographic tool, Medication adherence rating scale (MARS) and structured interview schedule. Majority of the patients (57.50%) were nonadherent to drug regimen. Within patient related reasons majority (74%) of patients having reasons of nonadherence due to medicines are costly to buy; among hospital related reasons, 63% of the patients having hospital is far away from their home, and within miscellaneous reasons 51% unable to come to hospital due to lock down. Nonadherence among schizophrenic patients were significant with gender, education, occupation, type of family, monthly per capita income, residence, addiction status, and duration of illness at 0.05 level. Study was implicated on nursing practice, education, administration and research. An experimental study can be conducted to explore the effectiveness of awareness programme to improve adherence among schizophrenic patients.

The study was aimed to assess the level of Depression and coping strategies adopted by senior citizens.106 participants were selected by simple random sampling. Standardized Geriatric Depression Scale-SF was used to assess level of Depression and standardized brief COPE Scale was used for measuring adopted coping strategies. The study results depicted that majority (70.76%) of senior citizens had Depression in which 9.44% of senior citizens had severe Depression followed by 28.30% moderate Depression, 33.02% mild Depression. About 22.64% of senior citizens were having poor adopted coping strategies followed by 59.43% average and only 17.93% good. Depression was negatively correlated (r=-0.886) with adopted coping strategies at 0.001 level of significance.

Background: A sense of discontent with services of medical practitioners and growing reliance on ... more Background: A sense of discontent with services of medical practitioners and growing reliance on alternative medicine with increased public awareness, negative publicity leads to increased lawsuits against medical professionals. Medical ethics training provides a basis for balancing one's obligation to patient and practice, as well as responsibility to those seeking medical care. Aims and Objectives: To assess medical students' knowledge and attitude towards medical ethics. Material and Method: A cross-sectional questionnairebased study among 246 medical undergraduates was conducted. Data was analyzed for percentage, mean and 't' test. Results: Majority knew importance of medical ethics in medical profession and existence of institutional ethics committee. 84.9% agreed that written informed consent should be mandatory. Response was statistically significant regarding confidentiality (p=0.001883), utmost respect for human life (p=0.00542) and respect for dignity and privacy of patient (p=0.001408). 80.4% disagreed that ethical conduct is important only to avoid legal action. 82.5% agreed strongly to integrate medical ethics in medical curriculum. Conclusion: Though students had adequate knowledge about medical ethics, reinforcement at all levels of medical education is necessary.
