This case study describes experiences from using the “engaging personas and narrative scenarios” approach [1], [2] for defining requirements for next-generation industrial robots. We found that additional steps were necessary to supplement the methodology to fit the development of complex industrial robots, namely globalization, validation of personas among end users, prioritization of personas, creation of common vocabulary, identification of business critical scenarios and identification of safety critical situations. The main benefit from using personas and scenarios was their role as communication catalyst and how the descriptions facilitate building a common vision within the project team.

The largest communication problem is language; people speak different languages and have limited knowledge in other languages. This problem is central in manuals and instructions for assembly and installations. One hopeful solution is that pictures can replace verbal instructions. In this paper we will discuss how

However, there is now a higher number of technological devices being used onboard ships to assist crew members in their daily tasks. So gaining access to these environments is even more important now since this increased use of technology has impacted the work practices of crew members. This paper is therefore a first step towards researching what technologies are now being incorporated onboard ships, their impact, and proposed future HCI solutions for the maritime domain.

However, as it is coupled with its challenges of distance, time, and culture, it increases the importance of identifying and understanding the specific factors that enable and hinder GSD teams. This paper presents the approach and preliminary findings from an exploratory study of the enabling and inhibiting factors that affected several globally distributed projects in a large commercial organization. Our quantitative analysis includes grouping these factors to reduce the dimensional complexity, studying their underlying causal relationships, and identifying the most influential factors using factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The paper concludes by presenting preliminary findings, limitations, and directions for future work.
