Regional action plan for chimpanzees and gorillas in west equatorial Africa

There are at least 19 and possibly 21 species of primates definitely present in Gabon, making it one of the richest countries in the world for primates. Most of the species are still widespread and one, the sun-tailed guenon, is endemic. Hunting and habitat destruction are the main threats to the country's primates. The major problem at the moment is the opening up of previously inaccessible areas by logging companies and the Trans Gabon railway, which leads to an increase in hunting pressure. Several species are threatened; the mandrill/drill, the black colobus, and the sun-tailed guenon need special conservation measures. Suggestions for action are made and several new reserves have recently been proposed.

The Central African Republic (CAR) has made an impressive commitment to biodiversity conservation... more The Central African Republic (CAR) has made an impressive commitment to biodiversity conservation, with a total of 15 protected areas covering about 10.9% of the country. This study critically examines the status of these protected areas in light of their potential for long-term protection of biodiversity. First of all, the protected area system does not protect a representative sample of the ecoregions of the CAR. Even more important is the fact that only 32% of the protected areas are adequately managed. Law-enforcement is inadequate, and poaching poses the largest threat to biodiversity conservation. Given the dim economic prospects, the CAR will need continued financial as well as technical assistance to deal with protected area management. Experiences have shown that such intervention can make a difference. However more attention needs to be given to capacity building, long-term funding mechanisms, regional collaboration and political commitment to make such interventions sustainable in the long-term.

The proof is displayed with Feynman diagrams. The axial and vector Ward identities, for the quark propagator and for the ladder, exactly cancel any model dependence. Off mass shell and finite size effects are included in the quark-antiquark pion Bethe Salpeter vertices. This is applied to compute the isospin 0, 1 and 2 scattering matrices off the mass shell .

The density estimates were based on nest counts. The strip transect census and the line transect survey method (Standing Crop Nest Count) were used to estimate the gorilla nest group density. The strip transect has been most commonly used to date. It assumes that all nest groups within the width of the strip are detected, but as this assumption is easily violated in the dense tropical rain forest, the line transect survey was also used. In this method, only the nest groups on the transect line itself should be detected. This method proved to be an adequate and easy technique for estimating animal densities in dense vegetation. The gorilla density of 1.6 individuals km À2 (line transect survey method) found for the Dzanga sector is one of the highest densities ever reported in the literature for the Western lowland gorilla. The density estimate for chimpanzees was 0.16 individuals km À2 (census method). The results of this study con¢rm the importance of the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park for primate conservation.

Although it was initiated with an emphasis on anti-poaching, the project has evolved into a “model” Integrated Conservation and Development Project (ICDP). The DS project includes programs for wildlife protection, tourism development, research, education, and rural development in its goal to develop, protect, and manage the DzangaSangha Dense Forest Special Reserve and the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park. This paper addresses a key question: Is the ICDP approach the right one, or would a traditional conservation approach be at least as effective? ICDPs find themselves situated between traditional protectionist approaches with complete exclusion from resources and more development-oriented approaches where local people are expected to manage their own resources sustainably. The DS project has faced numerous difficulties in achieving its goals, including population increase, dia...

The results were generated at a workshop held in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo in May 2005 with over 70 participants representing range-state governments, national and international conservation organizations, research institutions and funding agencies. Workshop participants agreed that by far the most serious short-term threats to apes in this region are poaching and disease epidemics. In the longer term, however, workshop participants believed that habitat loss and disturbance will become as serious a threat as hunting and disease. Experts agreed upon a list of 12 priority areas (seven exceptional areas and fi ve important areas), as well as two areas that are priorities for surveys. These areas sum to a total of over 150,000 km. Experts also identifi ed knowledge gaps includin...
