Herein we report a study on the ability of a mixture of microorganisms (MOM) to interact with organochlorinated compounds belonging to different chemical classes, i.e. DDT, PCB, tetrachlorobenzene, and lindane. Experiments in vitro showed the disappearance, partially reversible of these compounds in mixtures containing microorganisms, with a trend dependent on the kind of used pollutant. Unexpected 'complexation' by some components of molasses used as growth nutrient for microorganisms was found. Experiments carried out in the presence of soil showed that also in this case the participation of MOM to hide pollutants cannot be excluded. The obtained results may be an interesting starting point for further investigations on the bioremediation of organic pollutants using biological and not expensive method.

The R enantiomer of the 9-hydroxystearic acid, (9R)-9-HSA, produced from Dimorphotheca sinuata L. seeds, has proven to act as a natural negative regulator of tumor cell proliferation. On this basis, hydroxyapatite was synthesized with increasing contents of (9R)-9-hydroxystearate, up to about 8.6 wt%. The incorporation of HSA in the composite nanocrystals induces a reduction of the crystal mean dimensions and of the length of the coherently scattering crystalline domains, which suggest a preferential adsorption onto the hydroxyapatite crystal faces parallel to the c-axis direction. The composite nanocrystals were designed so that their cytostatic and cytotoxic effects towards osteosarcoma cells are modulated by hyd...

Research paper thumbnail of Asymmetric Michael Additions Catalyzed by Ni(II) and Co(II) Complexes with Homochiral Ligands

Journal of Molecular Catalysis, 1991

Abstract Two Michael-type addition reactions of nitromethane to chalcone, reaction (1a), and of m... more Abstract Two Michael-type addition reactions of nitromethane to chalcone, reaction (1a), and of methyl 1-oxo-2-indanecarboxylate to methyl vinyl ketone (reaction (1b)) have been tested for catalytic asymmetric induction when carried out in the presence of Ni(II) or Co(II) and homochiral ligands. Proline-derived ligands in conjunction with Ni(II) are found to be moderately effective asymmetric inductors in the former addition (up to 59% e.e.). For this addition the absolute configuration of the adduct ( 2 ) has been established via correlation with ( S )-(+)-1-(dimethylamino)-2,4-diphenylbutan-4-one ( 21 ). For reaction (1b), Co(II) complexes appear to be the more effective catalysts; the highest e.e. (38%) was obtained with a tetradentate ligand, a diaminodiol ( 16 ). Although the e.e.s so far obtained are not much better than those previously obtained, the method appears to allow further improvement.

Hydrogen is evolved, and lithium sulfate precipitates quantitatively following the equation: 2LiAIH, + H,SO, Li2S0, 1 + 2A1H3 + 2H2 Amberlite IRA 93 is treated with the obtained THF solution of AIH, under argon. This resin reduces aldehydes, ketones and esters in good yields and, stored in a desiccator, is stable for almost a month. The capacity of the polymeric reagent has been evaluated by treating a weighed amount of the resin with an excess of acetic acid and backtitrating with aqueous 0,l M sodium hydroxide: a mean value of 5 3 mmol of aluminium hydride per gram of dry resin is obtained. Reactions are performed in batch, at room temperature under an inert atmosphere, by stirring the substrate, dissolved in a dry solvent, usually diethyl ether (hexane, THF and methylene chloride are also suitable), with a twofold molar excess of resin:

Research paper thumbnail of Microscopic Structure of Crystalline Langmuir Monolayers of Hydroxystearic Acids by X-ray Reflectivity and GID:  OH Group Position and Dimensionality Effect

Langmuir, 2005

Here we report a set of measurements on a series of hydroxystearic acids in which the position of the secondary competing hydrophilic group position is varied along the whole extent of the alkyl chain from position 2 (i.e., close to the primary hydrophilic group) to positions 7, 9 and 12, the latter being the compounds mostly studied in the literature. We show here direct microscopic evidence, obtained by synchrotron radiation reflectometry and grazing incidence diffraction, that the position of the secondary hydrophilic group not only strongly influences the phase diagram as determined by compression isotherms and ellipsometry but also induces different crystallization patterns in the 2D system of the Langmuir monolayer. In particular, we report for the first time the existence of a turning point in the effects of the hydroxyl position on the monolayers structure at 7-HSA.
