In order to achieve the vision of creating a "smart city," it is necessary to reach a number of b... more In order to achieve the vision of creating a "smart city," it is necessary to reach a number of basic requirements fi rst. The purpose of these criteria is to emphasize the ways in which a city's opportunities and resources contribute to the growth of a prosperous economy that is mindful of the environment, while also supporting the development of a society that is healthy. In order to shed light on the prevalent practices of smart cities, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the criteria defi ned by the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The paper not only offers a clarifi cation of the idea behind smart cities, but it also investigates the many different ways in which smart cities might be applied. In addition to this, it provides a thorough investigation of a number of the most common criticisms raised concerning smart cities. This study intends to enhance the understanding of the fundamental elements driving the implementation and growth of smart cities by investigating these features.

A part of research conducted in workshop at the Doctoral Scientific Study of Architecture and Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb is presented: an overview of the development of laboratory buildings, contemporary influences and development trends, and criteria for programming and designing laboratory buildings are included.

We at a new step of software where the development of applications is done not using instructions... more We at a new step of software where the development of applications is done not using instructions, but composing applications. The software object oriented which allows the integration between applications is the solution for the designer to produce the own software. It is possible to use integrated applications with a limited knowledge of algorithms and programming languages. That allows the not specialized users to use specialized multimedia tools. The consequences of this opportunity can result very important not only for the designer but above all the actors involved in the decision making process. It is hard to evaluate the social weight of hypertexts and hypermedia in the field of social participation to the decision making. However their efficiency in the communication problem it is clear, we can preview that in the next future the use of hypermedia will be more extensive in the field of decision making, which involve public interests. Some hypertexts developed in the CAAD Laboratory of the Third University are briefly described.

The development of information technology and the global economy are causing the emergence of new... more The development of information technology and the global economy are causing the emergence of new forms of work and entrepreneurial collaborations. These changes are at the intersection of educational and business activities as well as creative and technological domains. This new design thinking culture requires a stimulating environment. For the last ten years, we have been researching new spatial configurations that provide support for creative and innovative processes. These facilities, with creative and social dynamic they provide, were put into the context of new campus planning, sustainable lifestyle promotion and urban regeneration founded on nature-based solutions. This paper discusses the spatial development of architectural spaces which can house a mix of activities (creation, innovation, enterprise) and offers an elaboration of their organizational and functional characteristics. Moreover, it puts their characteristics into the context of brownfield reuse for the establishment of a new urban identity and the quality of place. This innovative approach for new facilities has been validated by academic community and a local community in Zagreb.

Many rural villages and towns in Croatia are having difficulty making the economic transition to ... more Many rural villages and towns in Croatia are having difficulty making the economic transition to a modern market economy. Sixty years of Communism followed by the Croatian war for independence have presented serious economic challenges for the rural sector. Among the challenges are unemployment, deteriorating infrastructures, inexperienced local governments, and an aging population. Villages in the continent or on the coast and islands have experienced significant out-migration toward urban areas. Given the current demographic trends, the countryside will be abandoned within ten years unless rural development initiatives are implemented to build sustainable economies in rural Croatia. This paper describes the reasons and starting points for a project that advocates building a formal partnership between rural communities and local governments in Croatia working with the University of Zagreb, the University of Georgia, and the Croatian NGO ICAM to develop the capacity of rural areas to implement sustainable and replicable economic development initiatives.

Arhitektonski fakultet tako postaje – odlukom Hrvatskog sabora od 26. rujna 1962. godine – samostalna znanstvena i nastavna ustanova kojoj je zadaca da uvođenjem studenata u teoretska i prakticna znanja te metode znanstvenog rada, kao i suradnjom s drugim znanstvenim i nastavnim institucijama u zemlji i inozemstvu, daje izobrazbu strucnjacima visoke strucne spreme u diplomskoj nastavi. Jednako su vrijedni zadaci i poslijediplomsko obrazovanje mladih strucnjaka – osposobljavanje novih narastaja znanstvenika i nastavnika. Prvi dekan Arhitektonskog fakulteta bio je prof. Drago Galic. Rad prezentira razvoj, ustrojstvo, nastavne programe, znanstveno-istraživacku djelatnost, suradnju i akademske ciljeve Arhitektonskog fakulteta.
