Upon continuous feeding with water, the central axial region experiences local low pressure across the height yielding the formation of an air-core which executes meandering motion similar to the oscillation of an elastic string. We investigated the vortical flow and the induced oscillating behavior of an air column submerged in a water flow field inside a hydrocyclone. Through series of experiments in a transparent hydrocyclone, and subsequent full scale multiphase flow simulations with the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM), we analyzed the morphological characteristics of the air-core (mean and fluctuating properties). Air-core oscillations are characterized in terms of spatial wavelength and frequency. We show that hydrodynamics driven oscillating behavior of the air-core share an analogy with the vibration of an elastic beam. Following this analogy, we obtain a scaling relationship bet...

A technological solution to overcome this problem is to perform the carbonation process inside a stirred bead mill, which aims to continuously remove the surface by-product layers by attrition. In this work, the aqueous carbonation of ferronickel slag, a mineralogically complex mining waste composed of a Mg/Si rich amorphous phase and a crystalline ferrous forsterite, was studied at 150°C and under 10 bar of CO2 with different operating configurations: carbonation alone (C mode), attrition followed by carbonation (A-C mode) and concomitant attrition and carbonation (AC mode). By careful observation of the mineralogy and the surface of the secondary phases formed using complementary analytical techniques, the article allows a better understanding of the passivation ...

Research paper thumbnail of Design of a hybrid leaching process for mineral carbonation of magnesium silicates: learnings and issues raised from combined experimental and geochemical modelling approaches

The formation of passivation layers is the major obstacle to the development of direct aqueous mi... more The formation of passivation layers is the major obstacle to the development of direct aqueous mineral carbonation of magnesium silicates, one of the most promising routes for large-scale CO2 mitigation. This observation has led to considerable research efforts to prevent the formation of these layers and/or to exfoliate them continuously during the reaction. This keynote gives an account of different solutions investigated by a French research consortium initiated within the framework of several collaborative projects, including the methodology developed to optimize process efficiency and cost. Chemical-based solutions using chelating agents were first examined, but the variety of minerals and also the complex nature of leached surface layers for a given ore demonstrated the need for highly versatile and tunable chemical systems (able to modulate the precipitation of silica or phyllosilicates without sequestrating alkaline metals) and thus the need for a more robust solution. Research paper thumbnail of Interfacing the Probabilistic Bowtie Analysis with the Regulatory Risk Matrix

Chemical engineering transactions, 2019

Probabilistic bowtie risk analysis is a quantitative risk analysis method widely used by industry... more Probabilistic bowtie risk analysis is a quantitative risk analysis method widely used by industry and recommended by regulatory bodies for studying major hazard scenarios. Its standard use consists in estimating the mean frequency of occurrence of the top event and subsequent consequences by propagating the mean frequency of occurrence of basic events through fault and event trees. Such a practice does not take full advantage of the probabilistic nature of bowtie risk analysis. In this paper, we use an industrial case study to introduce a new and simple graphical representation of probabilistic Bowtie (BT) results that provides a readily interpretable interface with the regulatory risk matrix used by decision-makers. Instead of collapsing the probability distribution of occurrence of an undesirable event into a single value, which may be misleading, it expresses the risk of occurrence as a likelihood of belonging to each level of the risk matrix. This representation is very informat...

This presentation was written with engineering trainers in mind. It should provide them with an applied and illustrative guide for easy development of applications that merge Excel and R using BERT as the interoperability solution. Such applications, which are interactive by design since they use Excel as their front end, can help engineering educators increase the attractiveness and dynamics of their engineering courses.

Innovative technologies can make a significant difference in terms of resource and cost saving, but they often fail to reach the market because they cannot demonstrate a successful track record of previous applications. In this context, it has appeared the Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) with the main aim of helping innovative environmental technologies to reach the market faster and easier. ETV is an initiative that provides for third-party verification of the performance claims made by technology manufacturers in business-to-business relations. By issuing a Statement of Verification, which is the product of a successful ETV process, ETV provides credible information on the new technology to could reach the market reducing risks. Research paper thumbnail of Validating the direct aqueous attrition-leaching carbonation process by coupled thermodynamic and kinetic modelling

The direct aqueous attrition-leaching process is an under development mineralization process prop... more The direct aqueous attrition-leaching process is an under development mineralization process proposed by the authors (Julcour et al., 2014, Chem. Eng. J., 262, 716-726). It was conceived as a robust additive-free means to overcome the formation of passivation layers at the surface of leached particles, which is a severe impediment to direct aqueous mineralization. It merges the leaching conditions necessary to process Mg, Ca or Fe bearing materials with the attrition efficiency of a stirred media mill, a process that is scalable to handle large industrial throughputs commensurate with mitigation of CO2 emissions. Up to this day, the attrition-leaching process has been validated under a CO2 partial pressure of 20 bars and a temperature of 180 °C to produce stable carbonate solid phases. Starting with minus 100 μm particles, the process has demonstrated a carbonation efficiency in excess of 80 % for a variety of natural silicate ores and mining wastes. With the initial batch process b...

Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance. There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on accurate and precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise and biased results. This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full...

This paper proposes a geochemistry-based modelling scheme for deriving the window of possible operating conditions for the attrition-leaching process to match the properties of the processed ore. The rationale is that the attrition-leaching process maintains the surface of reacting particles in an unpassivated state by continuous mechanical removal of surface leach layers, so that the process reactions can be modelled from thermodynamic equilibria throughout the duration of the process. The strength of the proposed modelling approach is that it bridges the gap between the properties of the ore and the process operating conditions. The present paper exemplifies the proposed process modelling route for derivation of the attrition-leaching process...
