Virtual mirror therapy (VMT) has been suggested as a method for alleviating phantom limb pain. The inclusion of tactile sensation in VMT has shown to be beneficial; however, delivering a tactile sensation to a phantom limb, without the use of invasive procedures, can be difficult. The current approach for transferring a tactile sensation to a phantom limb is called visual capture. The ability to establish visual capture has been demonstrated in VMT applications. However, there is little research into whether an established visual capture effect can be relocated to a more distal location for phantom limb pain management. This paper investigates whether a passive vibrotactile sensation can be moved to a distal location from its veridical location using a series of distally located lights presented in either a random or a structu...

However, a particular problem for patients regards their ability to plan routes in unfamiliar environments. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how visual cues, namely embedded context-sensitive attractors, can guide attention and walking direction in VR, for clinical walking interventions. This study was designed using a butterfly as the embedded context-sensitive attractor, to guide participant locomotion around the clinical figure of eight walk test, to limit the use of verbal instructions. We investigated the effect of varying the number of attractors for figure of eight path following, and whether there are any negative impacts on perceived autonomy or workload. A total of 24 participants took part in the study and completed six attractor conditions in a counterbalanced order. They also experienced a control VE (no attractors) at the be...

This is important in a mixed metadata paradigm as metadata contains a multitude of perspectives and interpretations from various groups of potential users. Thus, in order for users to effectively utilise metadata, and hence enhance the findability and discoverability of information objects, efficient filtering is required. This should be achieved via a flexible, contextual, personalised and reconfigurable interface.

It highlights on the processes of data collection using intensive interviewing and three stages of data analysis, namely: open coding, focused coding andtheoretical coding. In addition, the processes of constructivist grounded theory conceptualisation using memo writing and theoretical saturation are highlighted. Design/methodology/approach –While the actual results of the PhD study will be presented separately, this paper mainly focuses on the best practises and lessons learnt from the adoption of the method. The paper highlights on how the method enabled the researcher to conduct iterative scrutiny of the concepts and categories through the method‟s memo writing and conceptualisation processes four core categories have emerged. The theory provides the conceptual underpinnings for a new approach which moves away from expert defined standardised metadata to a user driven approach with users as metadata co-creators. Moving away from definitive, authoritative, metadata to a system that reflects the diversity of users' terminologies, it changes the current focus on metadata simplicity and efficiency to one of metadata enriching, which is a continuous and evolving process of data linking. From predefined description to information conceptualised, contextualised and filtered at the point of delivery. By presenting this shift, this book provides a coherent structure in which future technological developments can be considered. * Metadata is valuable when continuously enriched by experts and users* Metadata enriching result...

This paper reports on a comparative study, which investigated how emotional body language, from animated characters and real actors, are perceived. The results are discussed in relation to the uncanny valley [1], which is a drop in believability as animated characters become more realistic [2]. The results showed that, videos of the actor were found to be more emotional, more believable and more natural than the animated characters whilst displaying the same emotional body language (recorded simultaneously by Motion ...

Games with externally-defined but internally-validated rules are given the term contextually-ambiguous games, and it is suggested that a contemporary definition of pervasiveness in games should accommodate contextual ambiguity. Several pervasive games have displayed elements of this ambiguity, but examples of games which feature this as a core gameplay mechanism are rare. Therefore, four such games are implemented in a case study in order to explore the potential of contextually-ambiguous games. Results are tentative, but offer some insight into potentially popular features and target audiences of such games.

For this new paradigm, a new Principle of Metadata Enriching is suggested. This refers to the process of enriching existing simple, a priori, expert structured, metadata with diverse, post-hoc, socially-constructed metadata. Metadata enriching indicates a continuous process of user metadata co-creation, and thus metadata is never complete. It is an ongoing process of enriching.
