Teaching learners with hearing impairments in inclusive learning environment require identificati... more Teaching learners with hearing impairments in inclusive learning environment require identification and elimination of learning barriers. The current education policy in Zambian, 'Educating our future' of 1996 stresses the need to teach learners with disabilities inclusively. Effective inclusion of learners with hearing impairments entails identification of their learning barriers and making the learning environment accommodative. This paper is a literature review of some barriers that learners with hearing impairments experience in learning in inclusive learning environments and some accommodative measures to consider when teaching learners with hearing impairments. In this article we shall first explore the concept of hearing impairment and inclusive education from a historical perspective and thereafter explore the barriers that learners with hearing impairments experience in learning and review some accommodative measures for learners with hearing impairments in inclusive environments.

Research provides the basis for understanding natural phenomenon and can be used as a tool to find solutions to human problems. A researcher's understanding of research paradigms and designs in education forms the basis for an effective research undertaking. The application of research paradigms and designs in education is the focus of this article. The paper is divided in two major sections. Section one is on research paradigms and covers philosophical foundations of research and research paradigms or world views such as positivism, postpositivism, interpretivism, constructivism and pragmatism are included in this paper. Section two covers research designs, types of quantitative, qualitative and mixed research designs and provides basic knowledge on research designs.

This study sought to investigate the perceptions of lecturers on academic performance of student teachers with hearing impairments. A descriptive case study was used as research design. The study sample included three (3) Lecturers and four (4) student teachers with hearing impairments making the total of seven (7) participants who were purposively sampled. Data was generated using interviews and analysed qualitatively using thematic analysis techniques based on emerging themes from the study. The study revealed that lecturers perceived student teachers with hearing impairments as average and below-average performers academically. The study further revealed that student teachers with hearing impairments had mixed feelings towards their academic performance and perceived their academic performance as being influenced by their inability to understand concepts as well as lecturers' inability to handle them appropriately. The study recommended the need by educators of students with hearing impairments to have positive perception towards students in order to instill self-positive regard in students. The study further recommended need for lecturers to adapt tests and examinations items in order to accommodate deaf student teachers.

The Journal of Educational Research on Children, Parents and Teachers is an Interdisciplinary outlet for transformative engagement with research findings that implicate policy and practice within the domain of the educational development of children as well as the impacts of both the parents and teacher practices. For this reason, the journal publishes a broad range of papers from all branches of education relating to childhood to early teens, parents and teachers. Papers that feature curricula developments in the primary, secondary and teacher education are also published by this journal.

This review is necessary to put into perspective factors that may affect the attainment of sustainable development
goals particularly goal number 4 on inclusiveness, equity, and lifelong learning. Learners with hearing impairments experience various learning barriers in Zambian schools. Education for learners with hearing impairments in mainstream institutions requires educators to put in place measures that can facilitate learning and academic performance.
Adaptation of curriculum, effective use of assistive technology, and use of appropriate modes of communication are some of the prerequisites to the good academic performance of deaf students. In this article, we shall focus on some of the facilitators to the academic performance of learners with hearing impairments.

The study emerged from review of literature on difficulties faced by learners with Intellectual Disabilities in Mathematics and based on personal experiences with children with disabilities. Operant Conditioning by Burrhus Frederic Skinner as theoretical framework guided the study. A case study was used as a research design. The study sample included 5 learners with mild Intellectual Disabilities (3 Non Syndromic-aged between 10 and 15), 2 with syndromic Intellectual Disability 'Down syndrome', aged 16+ and 2 special education teachers, making total number of 7 participants. The findings were that learners with intellectual disabilities exhibited ability to learn mathematical concepts despite exhibiting different mathematical challenges and individual differences of Mathematical conceptual knowledge. The study also revealed that learners with Syndromic Intellectual Disability (Down syndrome), though 16+ exhibited more challenges on Mathematics concepts than those with Non syndromic Intellectual Disabilities. The study recommended the need for teachers to blend academic and functional mathematics objectives when teaching Mathematical concepts to enable learners with intellectual disabilities acquire the much needed functional mathematical skills in their daily lives as well as need by the Ministry of General education to develop a curriculum that may enable learners with intellectual disabilities to be exposed to real life situations.

This study sought to explore the effectiveness of teaching student teachers using E-Learning during COVID-19. Hearing students were learning together with students with hearing impairments in an inclusive environment before the closure of an institution. A mixed approach involving concurrent design was used and 193 student teachers who were purposively sampled from Kitwe College of Education in Zambia participated in the study, of which 4 of the participants were hearing impaired. The findings were that 53.9% of the participants had access to e-learning services, whereas 48.1 % had no. The study also revealed that 86% of the participants disagreed to having benefited from e-learning and cited lack of technological devices, poor network and expenses to purchase internet bundles as some of the barriers to e-learning. The study concluded that despite 53.9%...

Communication forms the basis for human interaction, exchanging ideas and feelings, and facilitating inclusiveness in society. This study, anchored on the theory of dialogism as the theoretical framework, sought to assess the natural communication abilities of children with congenital Deafblindness and further explore measures taken by caregivers/parents to enhance the communication abilities of the children. A qualitative case study was used as the research design. Snowball sampling technique was used to sample three (3) children with congenital Deafblindness aged three (3), eleven (11), and twelve (12) and three (3) parents and one (1) relative who participated in the study, making the total number of (7) seven participants. The participants were from Lusaka, Copperbelt, and Northwestern provinces of Zambia. The findings were that children with congenital Deafblindness could use natural signs to c...

Despite the Ministry of Education using Comprehensive Sexuality Education as a way of reducing various challenges faced by learners with regards to their sexuality education, the effectiveness and mode of implementing CSE is a source of concern. This study sought to explore the perceptions of learners and teachers on the role of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in reducing child sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy. The total number of 60 participants who included 40 secondary school learners and 20 secondary school teachers from two secondary schools in Kitwe District on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. The findings revealed that 50% of the learners were of the view the CSE had failed its goal of reducing child sexual abuse. The study further indicated that 60% of the teachers and 50% of the learners agreed that CSE helped to prevent early sex a...
