Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) is a brief, manualised intervention for trauma-exposed youth, which has shown promising results in exploratory studies. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the use of TRT among URM by investigating key uncertainties relating to recruitment, randomisation, intervention delivery and data collection. Methods A 3-month long non-blinded internal randomised pilot trial with a parallel-group design assessed the feasibility of a planned nationwide multi-site RCT. URM with or without granted asylum were eligible if they were 14 to 20 years old, had arrived in Sweden within the last 5 years and had screened positive for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Quantitative data were collected pre- a...

We examined these processes at the levels of the individual, the family, the school, and the community. By comparing children in Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway, the study also sheds light on the impact of broader societal influences. Mastering major educational transitions is a critical indicator of social integration and is related to individual psychosocial adaptation. Analyzing the processes underlying migrant children's adaptation to these transitions provides insights for theories of child development in general, and theories of resilience in migrant children in particular. These insights can be translated into recommendations for suitable ways to support migrant parents, to organize the educational system to foster equal opportunities for children from migrant families, and to construct policies that will facilitate the overall societal success of migrant families. Ethnographic descriptions from several Norwegian first-grade classrooms document how the program’s rigid and meticulous pedagogic standards shaped the social timing of TIEY lessons. In sum, the interaction dynamics in the classrooms were forced into patterns that we call ‘learning effectiveness temporalities’. Several effects were observed beyond those officially intended, most notably an increased emphasis on producing orderly and disciplined behavioral norms. As TIEY implementation was politically driven, the learning effectiveness temporalities that it generated have been analyzed as state effects. Their intensity was found to fluctuate with seasonal activity cycles and administrative surveillance patterns

Issues of ethnic diversity and social integration are pressing in many contemporary Norwegian schools. Norwegian education is organized in a national unity school system, and all but a very few children attend public schools, where the educational content is regulated through national curricula. Being firmly embedded in social democratic welfare ideology, a core policy aim is subsumed in the principle Equity in Education for All, that is “equal opportunities in education regardless of individual abilities and aptitudes, age, gender, skin color, sexual orientation, social background, religious or ethnic background, place of residence, family education or family finances.” (Norwegian Directorate for Education). In spite of this goal, the academic achievement gaps between majority and minority students are among the highest in Europe (Østberg 2010). Several et...

The CFA provides a continuous measure of attachment, and also an examination of the construct validity of this continuous approach. Analyses included 150 children aged 9-13, recruited from schools in Norway. The one factor-model ''Security-Dismissal'', as well as a model including the supplementary factor ''Preoccupation-Idealization'', fitted the data well. Individuals' scores based on these factors converged with the categorical attachment classifications, but added more information about individual differences within categories. The findings support the construct validity of this continuous approach to the CAI.

The Accompanied refugeeS In Sweden Trial (ASsIST) aims to evaluate a community-based intervention, called ‘Teaching Recovery Techniques’ (TRT), for accompanied refugee minors experiencing PTSD symptoms.Methods/designA cluster randomised controlled trial will be conducted in which participants will be randomly allocated to one of the two possible arms: the intervention arm (n=113) will be offered the TRT programme and the waitlist-control arm (n=113) will receive services as usual, followed by the TRT programme around 20 weeks later. Outcome data will be collected at three points: pre-intervention (T1), post-intervention (T2; c.8 weeks after randomisation) and follow-up (T3; c.20 weeks after randomisation).Ethics and disseminationEt...

Methods: The sample comprises 1759 early adolescents in fifth to eight grade (10-15 year-olds). The proportion of early adolescents of immigrants with two foreign-born parents were 862 and 897 were adolescents with two Norwegian-born parents. The gender distribution was similar in the immigrant and non-immigrant samples, 48.2% boys and 49.5% girls. Mean age for immigrant boys were 11.6 (SD 1.25), for non-immigrant boys 11.7 (SD 1.29), for immigrant girls 11.6 (SD = 1.25), and for non-immigrant girls 11.8 (SD = 1.27). Data were collected via self-report assessments. Results: A multi-group structural equation model revealed that the effects of reactive and pro...

Socio-economic deprivation and traumatic experiences pre-migration contribute to a high risk for mental health problems among immigrant background youth. Moreover, when adapting to the multi-cultural contexts of the resettlement countries they face several acculturation demands, which may also affect their mental health in adaptive or hazardous ways. One of these acculturation tasks involves developing the cultural competence necessary to thrive and participate socially within the heritage and the majority cultural domains. From a public mental health perspective, it is important to have thorough knowledge about acculturation-related risk and protective factors. However, this responsibility has been challenged by a lack of acculturation measures that are theoretically linked to mental health, and target th...
