One increasingly popular option is crowdsourcing -- allowing members of the public to add tags, comments, or transcriptions to the scans. However, while crowdsourced transcription projects have enjoyed some success, the field of transcription tools is still young and the tools themselves are fairly immature. This presentation will survey the field of crowdsourced manuscript transcription projects and the tools they employ, highlighting the issues that may inform the choice of a tool for an institution. It will then explore the capabilities and weaknesses of Scribe and FromThePage, two radically different tools for manuscript transcription.

Three panelists will present on their experience, challenges, and hopes for IIIF adoption, followed by a robust discussion and Q&A. How can medievalists at Fordham University translate manuscripts at the Bibliotheque nationale de France using tools hosted in Oxford and Austin, without uploading files from server to server? Ben Brumfield will introduce the IIIF standards and the ecosystem of tools connecting researchers with worldwide collections. In December 2015, the Harry Ransom Center was awarded a Digitizing Hidden Collections grant from CLIR to create an online archive of the writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's papers. One of the project’s deliverables is the implementation of the Mirador Image Viewer. Liz Gushee will explain how the Center’s project team worked with members of the IIIF community to integrate CONTEN...

This panel discusses the question how well digital scholarly editions produced by such tools reflect the theoretical notions of digital scholarly editions, and how such may be assessed based on both empirical examination of current practices and text theory in the digital era. The practice of preparing and producing digital editions is increasingly supported by purpose made and specialized digital tools, many of them involving crowd sourcing. Although an exhaustive survey and typology of these tools is still missing, by and large we can see that most of these tools are highly similar in functionality, text model, and editorial process. As such they express a fairly straightforward transformation from the physical book to a digital metaphor of the book, roughly along a trajectory of trans...
