Moreover, seizures can interfere with the biological rhythm output, including circadian oscillation of body temperature, locomotor activity, EEG pattern as well as the transcriptome. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this cross-talk remain unclear. In this study, we systematically evaluated the temporal expression of seven core circadian transcripts (, and ) and the spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA) in post- (SE) model of mTLE. Twenty-four hour oscillating SLA remained intact in post-SE groups although the circadian phase and the amount and intensity of activity were changed in early post-SE and epileptic phases. The acrophase of the SLA rhythm was delayed during epileptogenesis, a fragmented 24 h rhythmicity and extended active phase length ap...

The physiological variables are driven by the circadian system and, its misalignment, can impair the metabolic functions. Thus, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic alterations as a result of shift work and night work reported in articles published in the last 5 years, using the eligibility criteria both gender and indexed articles in English language. In order to execute this work, we perform a systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines and searched about Chronobiology Disorders and Night Work, both related to metabolism, in Medline, Lilacs, ScienceDirect and Cochrane. Cross-sectional, cohort and experimental studies with low risk of bias were included. We found a total of 132 articles, and, after the selection process, 16 articles remained to be analyzed. It was observed that shift work can cause circadian misalignment and, consequently, some metabolic parameter...

Research paper thumbnail of Recording Day and Night: Advice for New Investigators in the Sleep and Memory Field

Handbook of Behavioral Neuroscience, 2018

Abstract The investigation of the sleep-dependent mechanisms of memory processing and consolidati... more Abstract The investigation of the sleep-dependent mechanisms of memory processing and consolidation is largely based on the electrophysiological recording of action potentials (spikes), local field potentials (LFPs), and muscle activity from freely behaving rodents. The ability to record continuously for extended periods of time and across all the behavioral states that comprise the sleep–wake cycle is of utmost importance for this field. This chapter will review the main methods involved in the general technique, including the customized assemblage of multielectrode arrays composed of single wires or tetrodes, the reasons to choose either, the combination of arrays with cannulas for pharmacological injections or optic fibers for light stimulation, the surgical stereotaxic implantation of arrays, important aspects of pre- and postoperative care, chronic recordings and experimental manipulations, and data analyses able to effectively integrate information from spikes, LFP, acceleration, muscle activity, and overall behavior. Troubleshooting for a series of frequent problems will be addressed, including the choice of materials, difficulties with anesthesia, surgery and animal care, pitfalls of recordings and experimental manipulations, and important considerations regarding data storage and processing. Future perspectives of the field will be discussed, with a focus on the need to develop methods to dynamically track the spatiotemporal transformation of memories over time.

Research paper thumbnail of The association between sleep deprivation and arterial pressure variations: a systematic literature review

Sleep Medicine: X, 2022

Arterial hypertension is a cardiovascular disease defined as a sustained high blood pressure, con... more Arterial hypertension is a cardiovascular disease defined as a sustained high blood pressure, constituting an important risk factor for the development of heart diseases, such as coronary heart disease and heart failure. At the same time, pathophysiological pathways underlying sleeping deprivation provides biological plausibility for a causation connection between sleep deprivation and acute or chronic blood pressure elevation, such as the mechanism behind blood pressure dipping at night, which strongly relies on reduced sympathetic activity provided by sleep, besides empirical and clinical evidence suggesting that sleep disorders incidence is correlate with posterior development of arterial hypertension. The aim of this study was to systematically review published studies analyzing the possible relationship between sleep deprivation and variations in blood pressure during nighttime and daytime. The research was carried out in the second semester of 2020 following the PRISMA model and using the LILACS, MEDLINE and COCHRANE (CENTRAL) databases. The keywords used were associated using the Boolean method. Only trials and studies in humans unrelated to sleep apnea were included, in an attempt to answer the question proposed. Duplications and articles outside the topic were excluded. After the selection processes, fourteen studies were left, which were classified, depending on the findings, in four categories: 1) blood pressure differences only in sleep deprivation's night; 2) blood pressure differences only in the following day after sleep deprivation's night; 3) blood pressure differences in both nights and 4) those that found no blood pressure differences. It was found an increase in blood pressure on the night of sleep deprivation, suggesting a possible causality with an acute increase in blood pressure depending on the population studied. In general, sleep deprivation is acutely associated with blood pressure elevation or acute elevation of markers that suggest the role of compensatory mechanisms, such as increased natriuresis and increased parasympathetic activity.
