In adults, hearing disability is associated with numerous health issues, including accelerated cognitive decline, depression, poor balance, falls, hospitalizations, and early mortality (Davis et. al., 2016). Accordingly, age-related hearing impairment is a highly frequent disorder in the elderly and, at the same time, a risk factor for dementia in older adults (Deal et. al., 2017).

Previous morphometry studies evidenced atrophy of cortical sites in MS including the insular cortex (IC) and primary somatosensorial cortex (S1) which are crucial hubs of the salience network for bodily sensation and social cognition domains. Objective: Here we evaluate the atrophy of specific nodes of the salience network in MS and relate them to EF and SC deficits. Methods: 20 RRME patients (mean age=40.3; mean EDSS=2) were assessed with neuropsychology tests of EF (Phonological Fluency, Hayling test, INECO-Frontal-screening [IFS] and PASAT) and SC (reading the mind in the eyes, Faux Pas test) and voxel-based morphometry of white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) of structural magnetic resonance imaging. Results: GM and WM atrophy in patients with MS involved a pattern of frontal, parietal and occipital atrophy. Phonological fluency correlated with atrophy of bilateral S1-IC (r=0....

Research paper thumbnail of The Utility of the INECO Frontal Screening (IFS) in the Detection of Executive Dysfunction in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (P07.194)

Neurology, 2012

Even if several executive screening tests have been designed to specifically detect executive deficits, few studies have investigated their ability to tackle such dysfunction particularly in multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the INECO frontal screening (IFS) in the detection of executive dysfunction in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). 54 patients with RRMS were included in the study. 34 presented executive dysfunction while 20 did not. 32 control subjects matched for age, sex, and educational level were also included. All were evaluated with the IFS and with a battery of classical executive tests. A patient was considered to have executive dysfunction if he/she scored a one and a half standard deviation below the control mean in at least one of the classical executive tests. Sensitivity and specificity of the IFS in its ability to detect executive dysfunction in MS was analyzed. Using a cutoff of 25.5 points, sensitivity of the IFS was 73.53 %, and specificity 78.13 % in differentiating controls from MS patients with executive dysfunction. The IFS showed excellent concurrent validity with executive tasks. The IFS can be considered a brief, easy-to-administer, cost-less tool for the detection of executive dysfunction in patients with RRMS.

Research paper thumbnail of Relationship Between the Theory of Mind and the Ability to Change of Perspective in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (P2.135)

Within these deficits is the ability to infer feelings and thoughts of others (theory of mind). In other research, some authors have suggested that such capacity requires a basic skill that would be the ability to change perspective (a relationship analogous to the relationship between attention and memory). The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability to change perspective in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and determine whether there is any relationship between this and the theory of mind. Methodology: 34 RRMS patients and 39 controls matched for age, sex and educational level were included. Both groups were administered a test designed to assess the ability to change perspective in three domains: personal, temporal and visual. They were also assessed with a battery...

Objective: To evaluate the heartbeat evoked potential (HEP) in patients with multiple sclerosis (... more Objective: To evaluate the heartbeat evoked potential (HEP) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and controls. Background: The HEP is a negative modulation between 200 and 400 ms and is associated with the perception of the heartbeat (cardiac interoception). The insular cortex is one of the main areas involved in the processing of bodily signal information and of emotional awareness. Regarding MS, several studies have described atrophy of this area; however, there are no reports about whether interoceptive processing is affected or not in these patients. Methods: Thirty three patients with MS and 40 controls were evaluated with a heartbeat detection (HBD) task during which a high density electroencephalogram (hd-EEG) was registered. The HBD task consisted of one condition where subjects paid attention to an external stimulus (control condition) and a second where they followed their own heartbeats without external help (interoceptive condition). Each condition lasted five minute...
