The proposed system enables the control of limb movements based on the sensor data and the patient intentions. For that it has an adapted seat and several mechanical interface zones that have a set of sensors and actuators that enable therapeutics to implement an active/passive system that reacts dynamically to the needs of the disease under evaluation. The type and intensity of the training may be programmed by the medical staff that receives feedback in the software from the wireless sensors. The ExoBike allows the therapeutic professionals to put into practice adapted therapies with adjusted efforts for different patients. The patients’ movements are monitored using a set of wireless sensors network, implementing a personal virtual reality solution where the patient “play” in an environment strongly connected with reality.

It explains its working mode, its practical applications and possible uses in the development of applications for several purposes. This project includes the development of several practical applications for each of the components of Bitalino. Their interaction possibilities with the user and the enhancement of utilization examples for their various sensors will also be explained. Based on the same microcontroller used in the Arduino Uno R3, the ATmega328P, the base kit of Bitalino is composed of several modules that results in a low-cost vital sign reading platform. These modules, linked together, serve as a platform for the different sensors and actuators that we can connect to Bitalino. The Bitalino MCU module is responsible for converting the analog signals from the sensors into digital signals so that they can then be processed by the software and used by the application...

Although cerebral palsy manifest itself in different ways, affecting different parts of the body, there is usually a barrier that the majority of individuals have difficulty to overcome, which is its inability to communicate verbally and written. Thus, the main objective of this project was to create an alternative communication platform whose base settles in communication through graphic symbols, called pictographic boards. To validate the application like the one we describe, we used a User Centre Design methodology involving the main users of Symbolum, therapists and its students/patients, from an early stage. However, as we can only truly say that a system works after being tested by its users it is a primordial goal to make tests with their real users. In this ...

This article presents the design of a VR application with the incorporation of gamification elements for a physical rehabilitation equipment. A detailed description of the equipment is made for further understanding of the project. The VR application allows the customization of rehabilitation sessions according to patients’ needs. Furthermore, the application was presented to the medical team of a Portuguese rehabilitation centre (Rovisco Pais) and had great acceptance.

There are various causes such as the abstraction capabilities, the problem solving skills or the math’s background required for learning programming that can contribute to this phenomenon. Another aspect is that, when first being introduced to programming subjects, many students feel that their learning experience is hindered by a lack of motivation. We find that this may stem from the static nature of the teaching methods used in introductory programming courses. The lack of simple tools, where novice students can apply their newly acquired knowledge, without being distracted by overly complex user interfaces and technical feedback is another problem. The environment presented in this document aims to provide students with an interactive game that helps them consolidate core-programming skills. By letting students observe and explore a game environment while being guided through a predefined set of puzzle-lik...

Methods Two Bluetooth Low Energy devices were chosen for this experiment for their ability to record and transmit heart rate data in real-time, and as such our primary focus during development would be in obtaining this raw data. After collecting all the services and characteristics of the device, a method was implemented to read a value from a particular characteristic uuid, in our case the heart rate measurement. The resulting values obtained from the API follows the format specified in the corresponding XML file of the Bluetooth-SIG specification. Results The developed API worked as expected and provided...
