Eating Behaviors, 2011

The EESQ assesses eating in emotional situations that are emotion-driven ("I eat when I am lonely") and contextdriven ("I eat when I get a really bad grade"). Internal consistencies for the EESQ subscales and total scale ranged from .70 to .86. Criterion validity of the EESQ was established by statistically significant correlations between the EESQ subscales and total scale, and uncontrollable eating, external eating, and junk food intake. Eating in emotional situations was common in the sample; almost one-half reported eating in at least 3 of the 11 types of emotional situations (e.g. when stressed, sad, or bored) and 28% reported eating in at least 6 types. Overall, these findings provide support for the internal consistency and validity of the EESQ in low-income Latino children, and suggest that eating in emotional situations is moderately present in this demographic. Future studies are needed to validate the EESQ in other ethnic groups and examine the longitudinal tracking of eating in emotional situations among Latino youth.

Research paper thumbnail of Measurement invariance in longitudinal clinical research assuming change from development and intervention

Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1994

Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis is a class of statistical procedures that can be used to test multiple hypotheses about these relationships simultaneously while controlling for measurement error. The procedures have been applied primarily to testing between-construct relationships in nonexperimental studies, with relatively little emphasis on establishing whether measures are sufficiently invariant across groups and across time to permit these tests. This article uses an empirical example of a longitudinal experimental prevention study with two groups to illustrate the use of SEM, first, to systematically test measurement invariance across groups at each wave of measurement, and second, after establishing measurement invariance, to test structural invariance longitudinally.

Design: Participants completed surveys at a single time point. Setting: Assessments took place during school. Participants: Participants were 107 fourth-grade children from a large US city. Ninety-one percent were Latino, and 4% were African-American, which represented school ethnic distribution. Main Outcome Measure(s): Independent variable included was self-reported executive cognitive function (ECF). Dependent variables included self-reported fruit, vegetable, and snack food intake. Analyses: Primary analyses general linear regression models covarying for appropriate demographic variables.
