This document describes in a stylized form the institutional framework prior to the crisis –explained by different government arrangements, levels of financial deepness, openness degree of the economies and commerce concentration– and how this led to different responses to the crises of several of the world’s leading financial centers. Departing from this framework the paper analyzes the multiple responses that were put together by different countries to face the collapse of the financial sector; it analyzes the role of state’s management capacities to grant funds to worldwide markets to avoid a collapse similar to that occurred in the 1930’s. This paper analyzes how the crisis has been faced, using an arsenal of public instrumen...

Mexico has been an important magnet of foreign direct investment (FDI), particularly during the last forty years of the last century. The FDI has played a very important role in Mexico economic growth, particularly in manufacturing exports. But since the mid eighties the Mexican economy had change deeply from an import substitution model to export platform. The FDI has important presence in many different sectors with a wide range of technology. Mexican multinationals have been developed as well. Although the exports and value add is highly concentrated in a few hundreds of Multinationals, Mexico’s manufacturing is based on a broad platform of small and medium enterprises. The US has become the main investor, with its share of total FDI reaching almost two thirds of the total. In spite the huge increase in exports, particularly since NAFTA, the economic gro...

In the study that the author carries on, it is emphasized the unequal distribution of the incomes in this American area, the achievements and the consequences of the integration, as well as the effects of these issues on the labour relationships. Besides, it is emphasized the outstanding role that the migratory role has in Mexico and the United States, principally. Lastly, the study, takes into account the new labour worlds, emphasizing the employability and the structural and organizer changes that are taking place in this area.

The strategy was designed to encourage savings and enable households to get greater access to investment instruments in commercial banking. Yet, this goal has not been reached and the financial gap—between the low-income group subsystem and the traditional financial system–has subsisted. In the last decade, there has been a large effort by federal government to reduce this gap, increasing banking infrastructure and linking it to different programmes focused on poverty reduction, resulting in greater access of low-income groups to banking institutions. A follow-up discussion on financial literacy and the unbanked in Mexico will be introduced in this chapter. First, an outlook of the current state of the financial deepening and inclusion is presented, focusing on the main strategies that have been implemented to increase financial inclusion in Mexico. The efforts to promote financial literacy, especially among the young people, are then analysed in the context of the national education system and the financial inclusion strategy, reviewing as well the specific actions being developed by public financial institutions, financial associations, and the banking system. Finally, the chapter introduces a medium term agenda to expand financial literacy in Mexico, taking actions primarily at elementary schools. This section also points out the benefits that such strategies would bring into which reduces financial gaps in the country.
