Theses systems permit to cool down the batteries and assure the thermal comfort. In this paper a permanent magnet synchronous motor is proposed to drive such compressors. After analytical and numerical studies, the main features of the proposed structure are given.

By using this mode, the torque and then power in field-weakening mode can be considerably increased without any hardware modifications. Consequently, power and torque densities of SRMs become comparable to other technologies (synchronous and induction motors) and with a field weakening operation over a large speed range. This new degree of freedom makes it possible to improve the motor design, by modifying the rotor pole arc size or the windings turns per pole. Only simulation results are presented here, for a 12/8 SRM. Results confirm that the maximum power is improved (constant power on a very large speed range) and with a higher efficiency than that in the classical discontinuous mode.

The proposed strategy was first designed to control the torque in discontinuous-conduction mode and then extended to operate in CCM as well. With CCM, the torque can be increased at high speed without modifying the number of turns, the source voltage, or the converter; it is achieved through the control. Reviews of past control strategies, as well as the principle of this mode and its influence on the machine performance, are presented. The advantages and drawbacks of the proposed strategy are outlined. In particular, the power and torque densities of the SRM are improved so that this machine becomes comparable with ac machines without the drawback of field weakening. A new control law has been studied and implemented; simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

It consists in optimizing semiconductors positions on a heat sink by respecting the components junction temperatures and minimizing the heat sink size. The aim is to remove risks on the 3D converter components placement and ensure their effective integration before carrying out the first physical prototype. This approach is based on coupling an optimization environment with a thermal finite element simulation tool. A pre-sizing step using analytical models is performed to set the optimization computations coupled to numerical simulation.

Environmental issues and cost minimization lead to a hybrid system composed of pico/micro hydroelectric turbines, PV panels, a water reservoir as an energy storage device and a backup genset. The annualized least cost of energy is optimized thanks to a genetic algorithm (GA). The forced outage rates (FOR) of pico and micro hydro turbines are taken into account in the optimization process. Finally, the results of the system sizing are presented and compared. c 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
