Initial colour removal rates in different conditions were calculated in both cases. Influence of amounts of H 2 O 2 and FeCl 3 was studied and compared for the two photocatalytic systems. Finally, some conclusions regarding the efficiency of the two photocatalytic processes were established.

Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the sorption of the dye from aqueous solutions onto soil with particles of different size. Different models were used to describe the kinetic data, to calculate the corresponding rate constants and to predict the theoretical capacities of soil for dye sorption.

Experiments concerning the photocatalytic degradation of Erythrosine B xanthene dye were conducted in the presence of different semiconductor catalysts (TiO 2 P-25, TiO 2 -Rutile, ZrO and Sb 2 O 3 ). The experiments showed that TiO 2 P-25 exhibited the best removal efficiency. Photocatalytic degradation rate decreased from 0.9 to 0.01 mg L -1 min -1 when Erythrosine B concentration increased from 30 mg L -1 to 300 mg L -1 . The addition of hydrogen peroxide leads to increase of the reaction rate from 0.06 mg L -1 min -1 to 0.14 mg L -1 min -1 . Photocatalytic degradation of Erythrosine B led to a complete detoxification of compounds, but the complete mineralization was not achieved.

Several of these compounds are used intensively, in large volumes, are persistent, bioactive and exhibit bioaccumulation and endocrine disrupting activity. Some pharmaceuticals, including analgesics, antibiotics, antiepilieptics, β‐blockers, blood‐lipid regulators and contraceptives also have the potential to determine various physiologic responses in aquatic organisms. Other compounds (natural hormones and several industrial and household chemicals) able to affect organisms in receiving waters are also endocrine disrupting agents. A lack of information still exists regarding the potential impact associated with the occurrence, fate and ecotoxicological effects of endocrine disruptors, including pharmaceuticals and personal care compounds in the environment since few compounds were inventoried or regulated worldwide. In some cas...

The response surface methodology was applied for the investigation of photodegradation of 20 mg L −1 Orange II in aqueous solutions and for optimization of color removal efficiency. Preliminary studies were performed to identify the parameters to be selected for optimization. RESULTS: The input variables considered for experimental design were: solution initial pH, oxidizing agent (H 2 O 2) initial concentration and UV-A irradiation time. The multivariate experimental design allowed the development of a quadratic response surface model to be used for the prediction of color removal efficiency over the full range of the experimental region. Under the optimum conditions established in the region of experimentation (pH = 6.9, [H 2 O 2 ] 0 = 183 mg L −1 and t = 32 min), a 100% color removal efficiency was obtained in experiments. CONCLUSIONS: It was found that the variables considered have important effects on color removal efficiency. The results demonstrate that the use of experimental design strategy is indispensable for successful investigation and adequate modeling of the process because the interdependence of the reaction parameters cannot be neglected.
