This collection of studies was developed within the investigative framework known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL; Bernstein, 2018; Miller-Young & Yeo, 2015). The researchers who contributed articles to this theme issue of the Christian Higher Education journal were involved in a multi-year collaborative project with the goal of better understanding the pedagogical relationship of service-learning infused with academic faith integration as experienced by students in a Christian university setting. In conducting research projects related to their own classroom experience and writing up their findings, these scholars hope to further a conversation among Christian educators regarding the development of excellent service-learning experiences that are informed and enriched by faith-based knowledge and wisdom. The scholarly field of SoTL has been shaped over time by a great deal of discussion and deba...

A sample of 386 participants was drawn from a cluster of four different institutions in Taichung City, the third largest city in Taiwan. The participants were asked to respond to instruments designed to measure the frequency of teachers’ verbal nonverbal immediacy behaviors influencing students’ willingness to speak in English classes. Spearman rho correlations were computed to answer the research questions proposed in this study. The results of this study indicated teachers’ verbal immediacy behaviors were positively correlated at a statistically significant level with students’ willingness to speak in English in English classes. Similarly, teachers’ nonverbal immediacy behaviors were statistically significantly correlated with students’ willingness to speak in English in the English classes. H...

Based on my 20 years of teaching experience in the field of education, my perception has been that graduate students sometimes complete their degree with a greater emphasis on self-actualization than on serving others. One emphasis of the ethical leadership course that was the context for this study was how to respond to ethical dilemmas through considering the viewpoint of others. Two research questions guided the study: First, how can SL and FI be implemented in a course on ethical leadership in education? Second, how can serving others through faith and learning in action influence the understanding of ethical leadership in doctoral candidates? A scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) methodology was implemented in this study. This methodological approach aims to promote course improvement by using student assessments, faculty and student ref...

As a Christian educator, I feel compelled to help others make a sustainable impact on the lives of those who cannot help themselves. The desire to help others is an important part of professional and personal journey in understanding faith and learning integration (FLI). In the past I have felt that faith and learning integration was a great technique to train students to help others. I also believe that the integration of faith and learning should help students understand how the Bible applies to real life. However, due to the teacher-centered approach to FLI (where the teacher tells students what FLI is instead of enabling students to discover for themselves how faith applies to everyday life), the integration process can potentially become an empty academic exercise that has minimal lasting impact on students’ lives. I believe that FLI should be both...

God’s care and compassion for the less fortunate is mentioned throughout the Bible. This emphasis... more God’s care and compassion for the less fortunate is mentioned throughout the Bible. This emphasis reminds the Christian educator that the act of helping the helpless is not a suggestion, but one’s Christian duty. James 1:27 says, “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you” (NLT). Jeremiah 22:16 reminds us that to “know God” means helping the widow and the orphan. Likewise, Hosea 12:6 tells us to return to God, “Hold fast to love and mercy, to righteousness and justice, and wait [expectantly] for . . . God continually” (AMP). These verses suggest that when we help the helpless, we know the heart of God and become His hands in the process. This paper addresses the needs of orphans throughout the world by attempting to link research by Ruby Payne and others on educating students living in poverty in the United States with research on orphan education in other nations. The obje...
