Recent government announcements regarding funding for the Knowledge Nation, Digital Education Revolution and other similar projects, herald a new era for primary school libraries in particular, and education generally. The role of the library as an essential component of learning and teaching has risen in focus with the distribution of this funding designed to stimulate learning and the growth of knowledge. While on one hand exciting, itʼs possible that hearing deputy prime minister Julia Gillard (2008) announce an ʻeducation revolution ʼ giving ʻAustralian students access to new education applications such as virtual classrooms, e-books, visual and audio streaming and high-definition video conferencingʼ, may have struck panic into the hearts of some educators. The traditional school library that classes visited with subject teachers to research assignments... more The traditional school library that classes visited with subject teachers to research assignments and learn information literacy skills has largely disappeared . That essential role of the library as 'house of knowledge' no longer exists. A statement of the obvious, but if this change has been evident for a decade, why have so many school libraries been slow to adopt models of teaching and resource management to the extent that their very viability is threatened? Why are library leaders like Lyn Hay (2011) beseeching teacher librarians to transform their libraries from the static Library 1.0 digital information environment to the interactive information Web 2.0 iCentres? The Principal, asks the interviewee's opinion on the structure and operation of a secondary school library in 2010, as one would expect. He has a commitment to the role of the school library but is looking for a match of visions. He knows the library can be an isolated building in its non-central location within the school grounds but has a principal's vision of what he would like his school library to be, stating, 'I want the library to be a presence throughout the whole school, not just the physical building'. The teacher-librarian also has a vision focused on 21st century learning partnerships and resources distributed physically and virtually -there's a match.

Conducted by the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE), this United States conference attracts 16-19,000 delegates annually. In keeping with other conferences, an increasing proportion of presentations were streamed live or made available online soon after the event. While this increases the influence of the conference and creates opportunities for those unable to attend, organisers are noticing a change in the behaviour of delegates and attempting to analyse this change. It is interesting to take a glimpse of the democratisation of learning, the implications for traditional systems and exposure to opportunities for the learning community.
