Next to the niches nine engraved inscriptions were discovered. A year later an epigraphic study was carried out in order to decipher the Middle Persian texts. These rock-cut niches are in line with previously documented inscribed funerary remains in the surroundings of the historical city of Estaḫr: the inscriptions depict them as daḫmag. Less than 1 m in size, they should most probably be interpreted as ossuaries or cavities cut in the rock to shelter mobile ossuaries. The style of script suggests dating these funerary remains back to a period no earlier than the 7th century AD, most probably during the early decades of Islamic domination. These new tombs enhance our knowledge of the rich funerary landscape along the southern Kuh-e Hossein foothills, where we ar...

Through a study of the personal names found in the text, the author is able to show that t the chronological discussions and the resulting differences of opinion on pre-islamic iranian chronology that are so widely attested in islamic historiography, were already present in preislamic times, though probably only in restricted intellectual circles

The Christians in the East (1st to 7th century) held in Rome on 13th and 14th March 2009 and jointly organized by the Sapienza University of Rome, the Pontifical Oriental Institute and the Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente (IsIAO) on the occasion of Pauline Year (2008-2009) celebrating the second millennial anniversary of the birth of St. Paul, the Apostle of the Gentiles. The conference was devoted to studying the spread of Christianity in the Middle East during the first seven centuries of the Christian era. Particular attention was paid to those areas which, in a way or another, were affected by the influence of Iranian culture, from Mesopotamia to the Indus River, and from the Caucasus to the Indian Ocean

To understand the historical roots of Iranian social issues more profoundly and accurately, it seems necessary to examine the social structure and institutions of the Sasanian era. Such a study enables us to trace their subsequent development and identify the ways in which they transformed. This paper attempts to clarify the purpose and practice of divorce in late Antique Iran, by reconstructing the rationale for and procedure of divorce in Sasanian society based on extant legal cases using a socio-historical approach. It also tries to show the different types of divorce in Sasanian and post-Sasanian sources, emphasizing the controversy and contradictions among Zoroastrian jurisconsults and legal texts to identify different legally-sanctioned perspectives regarding divorce.
