Research paper thumbnail of Effect of relative humidity on hydrogen peroxide production in water droplets

Water droplets in the mist are initially about 7 μm in diameter at about 50% RH. They are collected, and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is measured using commercial peroxide test strips and by bromothymol blue oxidation. The quantification method is based on the Fenton chemistry of dye degradation to determine the oxidation capacity of water samples that have been treated by ultrasonication. It is found that the hydrogen peroxide concentration varies nearly linearly with RH over the range studied, reaching a low of 2 parts per million (ppm) at 24% RH and a high of 6 ppm at 52% RH. Some possible public health implications concerning the transmission of respiratory viral infections are suggested for this threefold change in H2O2 c...

Abstract Solar light induced photo-catalysts are of great interest for environmental remediation.... more Abstract Solar light induced photo-catalysts are of great interest for environmental remediation. Thus the TiO2-Ag NPs (different content of Ag NPs deposition on TiO2) were prepared, and characterized completely by various analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and photo electron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show the adhesion of AgNPs on the surface of TiO2, exhibiting absorption band around 550 nm in the solid state diffusion spectra. This is consistent with the HR-TEM where the existence of multiple zones having high crystalline TiO2 particles attached to Ag NPs is established. With XPS spectra, the oxidation state of metal (Ti4+) and nature of orbital orientation towards Ag are analyzed. Interestingly, with using Density Functional Theory (DFT), we studied how the crystal plane of anatase TiO2 [1 0 1] orients with the plane [1 1 1] of Ag NPs reducing the band gap energy altered by Density of State (DOS). The nano-hybrids (TiO2-Ag NPs) were then employed in the oxidation of ciprofloxacin (Cipro) under solar light resulting high oxidation efficiency under visible light, and analyzed the role of Ag deposition over TiO2 relating to the reduction of band gap energy. The formation of intermediates in the degradation was analyzed by HPLC-MS, corroborating excellently with DFT studies, and then proposed a possible mechanism. Meanwhile, the surface morphology of the catalysts studied by AFM shows how the surface alteration was seen after using in the reaction.

Research paper thumbnail of Photochemical and antibacterial properties of ruthenium complex of N,N’-bis(benzimidazole-2yl-ethyl)ethylenediamine under visible light: Experimental and theoretical studies

The formation of different ruthenium complexes was also recorded by LC-MS: [Ru(II)L1DMSO)]2+ (m/z = 563, RT = 19.9 min); [Ru(II)L1DMSO(H2O)]2+ (m/z = 581, RT = 15.69 min); [Ru(II)L1DMSO(H2O) (MeOH)]2+ (m/z = 611, RT = 17.0 min); Ph2P(Cl) = O (m/z = 242, RT = 13.3 min). Theoretical study was used to interpret the structural change. The change of electron density ρ(r) (dipole moment changes from 4.77 to 8.85 D) was observed in benzimidazole group in the excited state, altering the structural parameters of the complex. Furthermore, antibacterial study performed for the complex shows a high toxicity with bacterial cell even at low concentrations (50 μL, 0.5 mM). This is consistent with low cell growth factor with [Ru(II)L1ClP(Ph3)]Cl, established by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).
