In this study we analysed the hydrodynamic character of the Rio Grande da Pipa watershed in order to understand its influence in the stability of natural slopes. Local conditions affecting their stability were also analysed through back-analysis for two selected landslides. The comparison between temporal occurrences of 182 landslides that occurred in the hydrological year 2009/10 and the fluctuation of the regional water table reveals a clear association between both distributions. Shallow and intermediate deep-seated rotational landslides in the marls of Abadia geological unit are those that seem more sensitive to water table fluctuations. On the other hand, deep-seated landslides do not seem to occur more frequently during periods of high regional water table.

Measurements of suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) in the Aveiro inlet during eight tidal cy... more Measurements of suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) in the Aveiro inlet during eight tidal cycles, comprehending spring and neap tides throughout winter and summer oceanographic regime, in 2006 and 2007, were performed. The SSC results show significant temporal variability, suggesting that higher fluxes of sediments through the Aveiro inlet occur in general during the winter spring tides. In these events higher volume of sediments can be imported from the ocean and introduced in the lagoon. Textural, mineralogical, geochemical and microfaunal studies of bottom sediments in the lagoon entrance area evidence the main areas where the sediments imported from the ocean are being accumulated: near the South Jetty and at the western side of Mira Channel. The sediments accretion in these areas contributes to the stabilization of the engineering structures of Aveiro Harbour. The high tidal current velocities contribute to the erosive character which dominates, at the central entrance cha...

Radionuclide records (210Pb, 137Cs) for piston cores retrieved from the canyon indicate rapid and almost continuous accumulation over the last 250

The results show the dominance of coarse sand and a heavy mineral suite composed by tourmaline, muscovite, andaluzite, biotite, amphiboles, staurolite, pyroxenes, silimanite and kyanite. The textural sediment characteristics allow the definition of three different littoral long shore sectors: north, central and south. In the north sector there is a north-south increment in grain-size linked with clear evidences of a bioclastic supply from intertidal benthonic macrofauna communities. In the central sector, sea-cliffs are the source of heterometric sediments to the beach (from coarse sand to silt sized particles). In the southern sector, sea-cliffs also represent an important sediment source, nourishing the beach system with fine sands. The heavy mineral composition shows high quantitie...

The contribution of trace metals from anthropogenic sources was assessed by comparing present-day concentrations and average elemental concentrations for the industrial period (last ∼ 150 years) with pre-industrial baseline values. Baseline elemental concentrations are very similar for the Lisbon-Setubal and Nazare canyons, but varying degrees of anthropogenic trace metal enrichments are recorded in more recent sediments. The upper Lisbon and Cascais canyons appear the most affected by anthropogenic trace metal deposition; excess Pb, Zn and Cu amount ∼ 55%, ∼ 57% and ∼ 21%, respectively, of total inventories over the last 150 years. The upper Nazare canyon follows with 42%, 21% and 17%, respectively. Lower contributions of anthropogenic trace metals were found for the lower reaches of the canyons and adjacent open slopes, indicating that the uppercanyon areas act as trace metal depocentres, whereas dispersal to deeper canyon and slope areas is limited. The Tagus and to a lesser extent the Sado river appear the main sources of Pb, Zn and Cu to the canyons, but atmospheric dispersal of Pb seems also important, especially in the southern area. Anthropogenic enrichment of Pb and Zn in the Cascais and Lisbon canyons is comparable to values published for canyons in the NW Mediterranean and off Taiwan located in close proximity to industrialized areas. Different from Pb and Zn, present-day Cu enrichment appears to increase toward deeper water where pelagic sedimentation is predominant, suggesting that dispersal of this trace metal is at least partly linked with surface water plankton production.
