Research paper thumbnail of Fusarium spp. in Rearing Ponds of the Prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Puerto Rico: Water and Air Sampling

Caribbean Journal of Science, 1995

A mycological survey of Fusarium species was conducted in two rearing ponds of the prawn Macrobra... more A mycological survey of Fusarium species was conducted in two rearing ponds of the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) in southwestern Puerto Rico, from October 1989 to September 1990. Surface and bottom water samples were collected from each pond and processed by the membrane filtration technique. Air samples were collected around each pond by the plate exposure technique. Pentachloronitrobenzene Agar was used as isolation medium. Six species of Fusarium were identified: F. chlamydosporum, F. equiseti, F. moniliforme, F. semitectum, F. solani and F. subglutinans. The more frequent species in water and air samples were F. semitectum and F. equiseti. The distribution of species was not statistically different between surface and bottom water for each pond. A significant difference was found between air samples and water samples for pond 1, but not for pond 2. During the rainy season the total colony forming units (CFU) of Fusarium spp. decreased in air samples and increased in water samples. During months of higher wind velocity the total CFU increased in air samples. No significant correlation was found between the total CFU/500 ml in water samples and wind velocity. There were significant differences between the ponds, the surface and the bottom water of each pond and the air samples around the two ponds.

Thirty two female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: Control (C), MS, MS ovariectomized (Ovx), and MS Ovx plus estradiol (E2). MS was induced by administering 30% sucrose to drinking water for 24 weeks. After sacrifice, intra-abdominal fat was dissected; adipocytes were isolated and lipid peroxidation, non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity, and the activities of Cu-Zn and Mn superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were determined. There were no significant differences in the activities of Cu-Zn, Mn SOD, CAT, and GPx between the C and MS groups, but in the MS Ovx group there was a statistically significant decrease in the activities of these enzymes when compared to MS and MS Ovx+E2. The increased lipid peroxidation and nonenzymatic antioxidant capacity found in MS Ovx was signif...

These microorganisms can cause diseases in plants and animals, and might be responsible for an increase incidence of asthma and respiratory diseases in this region. A PM 2.5 air sampling station was installed in Castle Bruce, Dominica from March through July of 2002. Fourteen filters were obtained by running the air sampler continuously for 24 hour periods. The samples were collected in sterile Teflon filters (47 mm in diameter, 0.2 um pore size), inoculated in Malt Extract Agar (MEA) with lactic acid and incubated at 29° C. Colonies were counted, isolated and cultured on separate Petri dishes. Fungal classification to the genus level used macroscopic features and microscopic evaluation. The Nomarski light microscopy technique was used for identification of reproductive structures. A total of 105 colonies were isolated. Six genera including Asp...

The intestines of fourteen adult specimens were extracted, washed, and prepared for microscopy protocol. The presence of segmented filamentous bacteria (SFB) and rod-shaped bacteria (RSB) were observed in the fore, mid, and hindgut wall of all samples. SFBs and RSBs appeared to be more abundant in the midgut. Spore-like segments were only present in the hindgut. A non-characterized network of filaments was also observed exclusively in the posterior part of the gut. SFBs appear to be attached to gut walls and are probably indigenous.

The emphasis of mammographic breast screening is to detect small invasive breast cancers at a tim... more The emphasis of mammographic breast screening is to detect small invasive breast cancers at a time in their natural history when early detection and treatment will reduce significantly the risk of death. However, breast screening cannot be absolutely specific in its approach and detects a wide spectrum of breast cancer, ranging from microfocal low-grade ductal carcinoma in situ to large highgrade invasive cancer. It is well recognized that many of the lowgrade, special invasive cancers identified at screening have an excellent prognosis but may be so indolent that they would never have presented clinically or have threatened the life of the patients. It has been proposed alternatively that a proportion of these low-grade invasive tumours might, if not detected, de-differentiate over time into more aggressive, less well-differentiated tumours. Identification and removal of such cancers when they are at a low grade would avoid such progression. Detection of high-grade invasive cancers when they are small is clearly a means by which screening could reduce breast cancer mortality; for example, the Two-County Trial in Sweden has shown that histological grade 3 invasive cancers detected when <10 mm have an excellent prognosis, while it is widely recognized that large high-grade invasive cancers have a poor prognosis. In addition, the presence of vascular invasion and lymph node metastasis, which are associated with development of metastatic disease, are rare in grade 3 tumours <10 mm, grade 2 tumours <10 mm and grade 1 tumours <20 mm, indicating that detecting tumours under a certain size should be beneficial. 3 Ultra-small iron particle-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer

By... more A hydraulic occlusion device (HOD) made of inert and biocompatible material is presented here. By injecting water into the device, it expands and causes compression of the main pulmonary artery, consequently increasing the right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) to mimic the effect of pulmonary disease of the right ventricle. Inert and biocompatibles materials in the construction of the DOH were used. After testing the HOD for distention, the devices were surgically implanted into the main pulmonary artery of 12 healthy, mongrel dogs weighing 18-28 Kg. Both the pre and post-surgical RVSP, and the RVSP under acute and chronic compression were assessed. Results are expressed as mean ± standard deviation. Differences between RVSP under basal and acute compression were compared using the t test for paired groups; while differences between RVSP under basal and chronic compression were compared using multiple sample ANOVA with Bonferroni's adjustment. Statistical signifi cance was considered when P < 0.05. Chamber pressures at known volumes ranged from 1.4 ± 1.4 mmHg for 0.1 ml of water to 185.8 ± 9.3 mmHg for 0.8 ml of water. Basal pre and post-surgical RVSP were 20.9 ± 3 mmHg and 22 ± 2 mmHg, respectively (P < 0.871). After acute compression, basal RVSP increased from 22 ± 2 mmHg to 58 ± 3 mmHg (P < 0.001); while after chronic compression, RVSP initially increased to 41.7 ± 1.1 mmHg, reaching 61.4 ± 1.9 mmHg (P < 0.005). The HOD allowed maintaining this pressure level for 60 days. The HOD is a versatile device that can be used to acutely or chronically increase the RVSP.
