The report provides an overview of the transport problems encountered in the LAC region, an analysis of the potential benefits gained when implementing ITS applications to the transport sector as well as a description of the ten most relevant applications demanded to solve the current problems of Latin American cities.

Brt went from being a fringe transportation option used in a handful of Brazilian and australian cities to becoming a prominent mass transportation alternative for local and national governments. Brt is not a single concept; rather, it encompasses a variety of applications designed to improve the level of service of bus-based mass transportation to deliver comfortable, cost-effective mobility emulating rail transit (Wright and Hook 2007, 11). This work presents a comprehensive analysis of urban sustainability in Latin America and the Cari... more This work presents a comprehensive analysis of urban sustainability in Latin America and the Caribbean. The document is composed of six sections, including this introduction. Providing the theoretical and empirical elements of the analysis, the following section briefly reviews the relationship between urbanization and economic development at the international and regional levels. The third section delineates the evolution of the concept of sustainability in the urban sphere in recent years. The fourth section discusses the principal problems that currently affect the sustainability of Latin American and Caribbean cities, and the fifth section provides the foundations of a methodological proposal for approaching the comprehensive study of the sustainability of Latin American and Caribbean cities, including their components, the interactions of those components, and the horizontal and vertical integration of the analysis process. En el se identifican y analizan las necesidades y mecanismos de financiamiento de operado-res privados de transporte publico de superficie en tres ciudades de Latinoamerica: Bogota, Ciudad de Mexico y Santiago de Chile. An important open question is how to use them to extract practical information in 3 relation to urban mobility, socioeconomic development, and well-being. Can we study individual 4 mobility characteristics by income group through the lens of Big Data? In this paper, we present 5 a data analysis framework that uses urban mobility extracted from CDRs, to study various charac6 teristics of the commuting network of Bogota, Colombia, relating them to income groups by their 7 residential location. We show that the diversity of commuting trips, defined in terms of entropy of 8 the trips, increases with the income of the population. Transit passenger behavior is an area of major interest for public transportation agencies. The r... more Transit passenger behavior is an area of major interest for public transportation agencies. The relationship between ridership and maintenance projects, however, is unexplored but increasingly relevant in the era of aging infrastructure. This thesis bridges this gap by analyzing changes in Smart Card activity for a sample of rail commuters during a large scale maintenance project in Chicago. Results show that between 8% and 11% of the passengers used the bus system as a commuting alternative while the majority of them continued using the train under deteriorated service conditions. Comparisons to a control zone show that between 2% and 7% of the commuters did not use transit for their trips. Using the observed results, we model the shift from rail to bus using a binary logit model. Implications of the findings are discussed.

A before and after hedonic model is used to determine the property value impacts on properties al... more A before and after hedonic model is used to determine the property value impacts on properties already served by the transit system caused by extensions to Bogotá's bus rapid transit system. Asking prices of residential properties belonging to an intervention area (N = 1407 before, 1570 after) or a control area (N = 267 before, 732 after) and offered for sale between 2001 and 2006 are used to determine capitalization of the enhanced regional access provided by the extension. Properties offered during the year the extension was inaugurated and in subsequent years have asking prices that are between 13% and 14% higher than prices for properties in the control area, after adjusting for structural, neighborhood and regional accessibility characteristics of each property. Furthermore, the appreciation is similar for properties within 500 m and properties between 500 m and 1 km of the BRT.
